So um... Let me get this straight, yeah? Are we turning a thread that protest against turning threads into Steam or DRM arguments into Steam or DRM argument? Yo dawg...

Anyway, you really might want to thead over here, discover it's all been discussed to hell and back, that your arguments aren't special at all, and so you can barge in and repeat the again, just because people clearly need to do that. Infinite loops for the win.

keeveek: The same things go with diablo 3.

Always online is a DRM, but also, it gives you online functionality that offline games don't have. If you don't like it, don't buy it, but stop treating this ONLY as a problem.
The idiotic part is that they don't care about people that don't want that online functionality ;)
To many posts to read here since I hit the sack last night!

Generally you can have a decent discussion here. Dont get me wrong I can be pro Steam when you get people going on and on about it and I feel quite defensive with owning so many games on that platform. 2004 Half Life 2 landed and at the time I wasnt happy about being forced to use it, over the past few years though the platform has got so much better and I started purchasing stuff in their sales Christmas before last and now have a huge library.

Then I started trying to install some of my older games from disc wanting to revisit gaming from when I started out on the PC. At times spending hours going through numerous posts round the web to get things running on modern systems. In the end I thought to myself why not just save myself the bother and actually start buying from GOG so the games are good to go once installed. So now have a good few titles here also. I know I can get the classics here and they work with no messing, so now I can safely store my old origional copies of games and keep them in good condition.

So I can safely say I will defend GOG in the way I defend Steam as the things they do here is something I hold personal to me, I can play my classics again with no bother.

A great example of community here is the Thief Games on Steam thread. The question was asked about whether the Steam versions work in the same way as the GOG ones. I bought the trilogy on Steam so I have digital backups now of my first edition origionals, I also gave feedback as to the Steam versions working just fine. If GOG had the same deal as Steam I would have actually preffered to get the games here as they are classics, either way I am happy as the Thief series are amazing games.

Now that particular thread could have turned into something really nasty with DRM arguments etc.. However it hasnt, there has been some great discussion about Thief on Steam and no bitching at all. Whether this is because of Thief being such a classic that everyone loves it and users welcome new Thief players or what I dont know. Its a damned good thread though.

I think it is balance in all fairness. I do hate certain forms of DRM, especially the ones that require an always on internet connection for a single player portion of a game (Not talking about platform here like Origin or Steam). However I just suck it up if I want to play a game that requires that, created a uPlay account for Splinter Cell Conviction as I wanted to play the single player part of the game. Didnt like it but that was the trade off if I wanted to catch up on what Sam Fisher was up to. Diablo 3 and Blizzard, I REALLY want this game, but during the beta the netcode was poor at best and that is also showing in final release. So I guess I will buy it, but it will probably in a few months when things calm down, servers arnt as busy and they get the issues sorted. Thing is I have to be online to play Diablo 3 so once again will have to suck it up.

They are probably in minority, since Diablo 3 in retail is almost impossible to get, because it's already sold out.

Good move for Blizzard.

It is sold out cause it is Diablo ;) And the hype and waiting for it is too much... A lot of people are buying because of that. I have couple of friends that complain, about the lag and that is not cool at all.Especially on Hardcore... you can get your game screwed up because of that ;)

gameon: Not trying to spark any arguments, but as there are some steam experts around: I have read about steam backup. Does that work in the same way as a GOG that is saved onto an external hard drive. Or will the games always require online and steam?
The backup is for the moment when you reinstall your windows ;) And one of the things I don't like is when you try to reinstall Steam..it removes all the games you've downloaded so far...

Yes, it takes all the game data and saves it to an external drive, but reinstallation from the backup requires being online. It's basically the same as a regular installation through Steam, only instead of downloading the data, the client loads it from the local backup (and then proceeds to patch the game to the latest version).

EDIT: Also, contrary to what spinefarm says, the function is not there for when you need to reinstall Windows. If you ever need to do that, all you have to do is take the steamapps and userdata folders as they are and back those up. Then when you reinstall Steam, you just drag them back.

Which is also quite handy when it comes to moving that Steam folder. It is rather stupid that you have to install the games into the Steam folder ....

Actually, you can just leave the Steam folder as it is. When you run Steam.exe from the folder after reinstalling the OS, it kinda reinstalls itself and detects all the games.
you know I feel by posting this thread kav became all 3 of the things he was protesting about...
As such this should no longer be an on topic thread and should be about

Cakes or Cookies which are better?

Fine it's about which dessert/snack food (but excluding Granola it's too healthy!) is better...

This is one of the reasons why I like hanging out here. A definite improvement over the previous title.
