I also say it's a very good game. Linear, yes, but very enjoyable, with a fluid gameplay and breathtaking scenes.
As for spending points, first you'll have to specialize, but later on, you'll probably have more skill points than you can spend if you specialize too much, so you can be quite a bit more liberal in spreading them out, even if you push out a skill or to to level 15 (it's possible after a certain point in game).
And yes, it was a good decision for you to get DKS - not only does it contain the whole story along with many cool features, Ego Draconis in itself was at times so hard it wasn't even fun anymore. DKS fixes that.
