Thank you for your kinds gestures.

By the way, honest question, are you incapable of getting the point or is something else wrong? Perhaps it is too dark, want me to light up a candle or something?

Elenarie: Planescape Torment seems equally retarded too, I mean how can you even enjoy that crap?

Elmofongo: So is Ultima 4, goodness this game's lack of music and dull 8 bit graphics is unimmersive, you know you are doing something wrong when the NES version of both Ultima's 3 and 4 look better :P

Oh and lets not forget the oh so joyous "depth" of giving a begger 1 gold each to increase my Compassion virtue by typing "Give" "1" and ENTER everytime and to this day no one at least has the desency to post just how many times you have to give 1 gold to this poor basterd :P
Aren't the NES versions of Ultima weaboo remakes by Japanese developers, complete with deformed character sprites with big heads?

AFnord: But why present it as a quick time event in the first place, and not just a quick cutscene, if "failing" does nothing?
avatar
Barefoot_Monkey: I wonder too ;)

avatar
Barefoot_Monkey: The only question is why they still interrupt the flow to present it as a QTE - they could sidestep this particular criticism by not having the slowdowns and prompts at all.

I need to stop skimming through texts and imagine that I know everything that is in them ;)

Anyway, I can answer my own question though. To give the illusion that you are doing something, that you are succeeding. If the player "thinks" (s)he got through a section through his/her own skill, then that person will feel the same sense of achievement as when (s)he manages to get through a genuinely challenging section.
On the flip side, if the player realizes that the game is just being manipulative like this, then (s)he might just get annoyed. That is at least what I would be.
This isn't a console issue, as I've seen a few people mention. Go and try to play LoTRO. One (of many) reasons I quit playing that game is the negative-easiness. Its not just easy... the game can play itself if you let it.

SOME developers are looking for the common ground of difficulty. This common ground has two big spikes in population. 1. The age 30 - 50 gamer that never used to play games... but now we are, and 2. the internet gamers (facebook, myspace, farmville, etc) that are looking for other gaming opportunities. These 2 groups throw the difficulty curve out of the window and completely off the block.

An example, from Lotro: You can autoattack enemies to death. If you don't mind clicking a single button, you can take on 2 or 3 mobs at a time with ease. Some people are soloing ON-LEVEL instances made for 3 or 6 people. The complaints by some of the players... "its too hard". "we need a way to get rewards without WINNING".

I don't think it makes it right, but I think its why the devs take the easy way out. The honest dev will include lots of difficulty sliders and options to make a game for all. But fully expect the defaults to get easier and easier as the generation that received and encouraged the invention of the console is continuing to finds games are more than just... games.
How is it someone throws a gay slur out and in forty-five minutes no one has told them to eat shit and die? They obviously have the right to post whatever they want but it would have been nice for someone to at least take them to task for it.
Ryse looks like complete shit.
Ryse looks terrible, but a lot of console games showed on E3 look amazing. The Division is the best game showed on E3 for me. So I don't get this whole "PC games are better than console games" - both console and PC games are great and we shouldn't look at them as console or PC games. Games are games and I love all of them - at least the good ones. ;)
