Elenarie: Text adventures are not real gaming... you just write some character.
Point and click adventures are not real gaming... you just press on pixels.

Planescape Torment seems equally retarded too, I mean how can you even enjoy that crap?

It's really hard to take you seriously when u insult one of the best games on the catalogue here and also point and click adventures.
She was trolling.

And if she was not, what do you expect, she is a Blizzard Fan Girl, who believes Diablo, Warcraft, and Starcraft the Apex Holy Trinity PC games :P

Elmofongo: I am surprised no one did that after they the first saw The Phantom Menace :P

RayRay13000: They did some stuff, we got a documentary "The People Vs. George Lucas", Red Letter Media reviews on the prequels, and other stuff. I guess that's something.
Man I feel sooooo sorry for these guys that went into the the theater to see the film for the first time:

Interestingly enough some of these clips were in the Red Letter Media review of Episode I.

RayRay13000: Penny Arcade on Ryse

Something else to click on instead of Shitaku.
After reading the article, it doesn't sound as bad as some people are saying. The QTEs basically determine how "awesome" of a finishing maneuver you get. If you mess up, you still get the kill, but it's just not as impressive as it could be. The game might end up being terrible, but I think that would more likely happen because it was originally supposed to be a kinnect exclusive than because of the QTE finishers.

timppu: But naturally time will tell, maybe Ryse 1-5 will all sell like hotcakes, and others start making similar games.
It's hard to tell, the mainstream is fickle and random. I thought sure the Wii was a stupid piece of shit and then it won the entire hardware generation, though no one acts like it did.

Xbox DRM, Ryse, whatever... will be interesting to see what the mainstream beast attacks.

Well, you are right about the fickle part, but I think this case and that of the Wii are entirely different beasts, there is a diference between the mainstream gaming audience and the type of mainstream that the Wii caught on with.

The former are those gamers that make CoD/Madden/Halo the hits they are, putting a lot of hours into them but possibly not playing many games other than those.

The latter are the people that don't play videogames at all but may get interested in a particular piece of technology, that was the case with motion controls and the Wii, but I think since then they've moved on to tablets and are probably never coming back to consoles, so I doubt they are going to go for the Xbox One.
Is there something in the water today? Between this and the Steamgifts gifting thread... what the hell is going on...???
I only skimmed this thread (for obvious reasons) but I'm happy I didn't miss that Penny Arcade link. Reading that, it's clear that the quick-time events do matter to rewards and the visual result, they just don't matter to the success of the kill. From my point of view, that's better than making them decide the outcome. I'd rather that the kill be determined by some gameplay sequence more complex than quick-time events, but they're still there to provide a little more control over the result.

Of course, but that mass market is still fickle and hard to judge. Call of Duty will fall, but when? Who knows!

jjsimp: I haven't finished reading the thread, but this goes way back. Don't forget that cinematic arcade game with the stupid knight I think his name was Dirk, Dragon's Lair. With that game you pushed the button or the controller at the right time. I never understood what the draw of that game was.
The graphics and the music. As a kid, I didn't like Dragon's Lair as much as I liked Space Ace, but really, the only allurument to play it was to "play" a game that looked and sounded so much better than any other games around, even though I realized at the same time that the gameplay part is lacking. Heck, when you put in some quarters into Space Ace, even some chicks might gather around to watch you play it, asking "Wow! Are you really playing that? It is like a movie!". That was at a time when other games looked and sounded like this, at best (which was quite fine, but still a far cry from the levels of Space Ace).

Same for Creature Shock, at the time it was a real feast to your eyes (and ears) that you couldn't get in more advanced games, even though Doom was already around. Overall as games I liked e.g. Doom 1-2 and Ultima Underworld 1-2 more than Creature Shock, but still I enjoyed CS for the more advanced audiovisuals.

But at the same time, I remember hoping that other "real games" would have as advanced audiovisuals as Space Ace or Creature Shock. And nowadays we pretty much have that, without having to skimp on the gameplay part. But it appears games like Ryse still try to do that. Not because those advanced graphics and sounds could not exist with a more advanced gameplay, but because the developers feel many people want simplified gameplay and less challenge from their games.

As if people who are currently playing God of War games now are thinking "Yeah this is nice and all, I just hope the gameplay was easier and simpler...".

Maybe they are right, what do I know. But my point is that the pull with Dragon's Lair etc. was not the lack of gameplay, so they were different from what Ryse is apparently trying to be.

But how can you call them real games when you just write text? They are real games as much as writing stuff in Word is a real gaming.

Did you really miss the whole point? :) Besides, if you do some searching here, you'll see that I've made a thread stating that I really, really like PlaneScape Torment. :p

I think this whole thread is one big missed point. This thing is full of people I really like, people I look forward to posting with and hearing from, yet everyone is at each other's throats in here. I'm getting derepped for my 'enema' comment and I'm guessing people have failed to realize I was referring to myself as much as everyone else. It's really kind of sad.
