This was indeed the case with the PS3, but I'm not assuming anything about the new consoles unless it is explicitly stated.

As for the PSN, there are way too many laws and hurdles to go through in each country to make a single universal PS store, not to mention the language barrier. The games themselves though have always been region free, you just need to buy them from an account in that region and they'll play perfectly well, I bought three games from the american PSN just this sunday. Have you never tried getting an account in another region?

I think it's impossible to make an "universal PSN" for the reasons mentioned by DaCosta. Each country has it's own language, currency, pricing policies, rating systems.

But it is possible to make an account in any country you want. Well, i have been using an US PSN account for years now (since the brazilian PSN sucks balls) and i've never had an issue. The only problem is that you might need to use a pre-paid card to buy stuff because the PSN does check the billing address (unlike the eShop, for example).

You can buy and download any game you want, there is no IP-block (the music and the movies services are IP restricted, though). Live does have some IP-locked games.

So no real news today other than Nintendo stuff?

I think now-a-days games like Fallout 4 and Deus Ex 4 don't get announced at these things, they get lost in the shuffle. Now that the console are announced I should just not bother with E3 as a PC gamer anymore, I guess.

That's really weird. I guess if you only ever use 2 or 3 characters(and you get to fight the full roster) it could sort of make sense. It's still weird.

I find it very funny that MS won't release the Xbox One in most Asian regions until late 2014. I find it even funnier that they won't give a clear answer (and are in fact avoiding the question) as to when they will release in Japan (which is not actually considered as Asia when it comes to markets). Quite frankly, if they don't release here with an amazing content line up and before the PS4, they may as well not bother.

Of course with that always on Kinnect thingy, they may find themselves in some trouble here given how privacy conscious Japanese are.

As for PS4 DRM/region free gaming, that could go either way here. Atlus are likely to want to use DRM to stop second hand sales, and region locking to stop cheap imports so they can charge higher prices here. They tried that with the Persona 4 fighter. Failed in that the second hand market was flooded with cheap copies soon after release. So they prevented cheap US imports, but also lost out to the cheap second hand market that sprung up instead.

They're not going to cater much to Japan because they don't give a shit about Japan. Hell, they barely give a shit about Europe.

Actually, it's not that they don't give a shit about Japan, it's more Japan doesn't give a shit about them. MS fucked up their introduction to Japan by doing exactly what they were advised not to when releasing the Xbox. The result was pissing off many people in the Japanese gaming industry that they needed in order to establish a presence here.

They never managed to get anywhere with the 360 as a result. They were, in fact, thoroughly humiliated; being consistently out performed by the PS2 - a last generation console. The few unique exclusives they had in Japan ultimately cut their losses and released on the PS3 in order to make a profit. So it's no wonder they canned all advertising and closed down their Japanese gaming division.

Now if they don't release here; that's fine. It'd be for the best. But they really shouldn't be stringing along the few customers they have here. In this region more than any other, they need to give a firm answer as to when, or if, it's going to release. They can't just display an Xbox One section on the JP site and leave it at that. Although I expect they are using that to gauge interest with the "sigh up for newsletter" button. But with no firm comment on release, they're not likely to get much interest at all.

And it's just an American focused console in general. PS3 won Europe handily last time and Xbox was actually third out of three worldwide, it's just the press is American focused and they won here (software wise), so Xbox is the "winner" to them. And I think MS is focused on winning America too, so it works out for both.
