Thought some people here might be interested that the "final" (not sure how tentative that is) version of the Circle of Eight mod for Temple of Elemental evil has been released. You can get the standard version which only includes bug-fixes and rules compliance, or the "NC" version with new content such as NPC's and quests.

"After ten long years, the Circle of Eight is pleased to present the 'final' version of our modpack - Circle of Eight Modpack Version 8. This release falls ten years to the day after the release of The Temple of Elemental Evil in North America. It is the culmination of years of dedicated work from literally dozens of contributors, and it serves as testimony to the enduring passion for quality turn-based strategy games in the modern era."

Yeah, I was waiting for it, to give another try. But I'm afraid this will have to wait a little bit now...

Thanks for the heads up.
The Co8 group has done excellent work over the years. They have my sincerest admiration.
That's great news! A part of me wants to go right ahead and download the mod, especially now that the flickering light source seems to have been fixed in Wine, but another part of me dreads having to start the game all over again. Oh well, I guess that's a good way to try out another part then, but not for now.
So glad I haven't played this game yet! ToEE is one of those "exceptional" games that I'd rather not play vanilla, without user patches. Daggerfall is another. Too many official bugs as far as I can tell.

Then again, yesterday I ran into one scripting bug in vanilla Baldur's Gate 2, where one boy which gave me a quest to save his home village from attacking beasts, offered me the same quest after I had successfully finished it once already. So the quest was at the same time both in my incomplete and completed quest lists.

I reloaded an earlier save game and decided not to talk to that stupid little boy, ever again.

If you're playing ToEE for the first time, it's advised you play the standard version of Co8 rather than the new content. Also remember to change the game resolution from the c08 launcher, not in game.

I use this:

It has a number of fan-fixes attached and I haven't noticed anything major in my current playthrough.

Are you using Tutu, BGT? Fixpack installed?
Thanks for the heads up. That game is on my "play some time if I ever have time to play and have played some other games I want to play more" list.
That's great. Now I just need the motivation to read a mechanics guide as I'm not trying this game without knowing how the hell it works. Last time I played I tried a pre-generated team and used an archer who, for some reason, missed 6 shots in a row. This was on Easy (or easiest) with NC version of CO8.

That's just low-level D&D, but the only "guide" you need is really the manual.

Ranged takes a penalty based on allies around enemies and range. Pretty much makes them incredibly useless once the battle gets into melee range unless you've taken higher level perks to offset it.

TOEE itself is a good game, but one that demands patience. Even with the Co8 fixes, I still found the game incredibly broken and barely holding on by a thread. Often it felt like a slight push could send the game flailing brokenly down a pit. I can't even imagine how it is unmodded.

But it has the best D&D combat ever in a video game. So it has that going for it at least.

No, as said, vanilla Baldur's Gate 2. I googled for it and apparently this bug is a known scripting bug in BG2. Workaround: don't talk to the boy a second time, albeit I don't know if there is any other problem with that that there will be one extra entry in your incomplete quests-list that you can't get rid of anymore.

(The boy is "Delon", and it is the Umar Hills quest. Just checked it.)

For Daggerfall, I use the very same all-in-one setup file. And also the corresponding TES: Arena installer.

Finally time to play TOEE :)
I tried to play this game, and found it incredibly obtuse. Now that I've played some 3.5 D&D, it might be easier to get into, and here's my excuse to try. Thanks for the heads up.
