As our catalog gets bigger and better every week, it's easy to lose track of some of the awesome games that we have to offer. We've been running one day "Gaming Gem" promos for a while now to highlight some classic titles that don't get the love of some of our best-known blockbusters like Baldur's Gate or Duke Nukem 3D. To celebrate summer, for the next two weeks until July 25th, we're going to run a Gaming Gem promo every day, so you can rediscover these lesser-known classics! Grab that plastic toy shovel and dig out gem after gem over the next 18 days. We think every game we're going to be offering on our Summer GOG.com Gem Extravaganza will be an excellent title, and we hope you give them all a try.

Today we have uncovered a hardcore RTS hidden gem ;) [url=http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/dark_reign_expansion]Dark Reign + Expansions is really the true, real RTS you’d want to play. A lot of innovative features were so hardcore that the modern games of today are using the pseudocasual counterparts.

First and foremost the whole setting, the new Hard Sci-Fi world that was created for Dark Reign is unique. You are the lone survivor of the Tograns, a human faction whose homeworld was devoured by a brutal civil war between the Freedom Guard and the Imperium. Now you have to be victorious in battle simulations of some of the famous battles between those two. If you prove yourself, you’ll get a chance to use an advanced probe launcher to go back in time and save the Togran’s leader and scientist Alpheus Togra, thus saving the whole civilization. The expansion pack adds a second campaign involving the Imperium, a rogue AI, and a secret research facility ;)

Dark Reign is full of innovations, it’s the one of the first RTS games to use fully 3D models and terrain that impact physics and damage. Fast paced action obliged the design team to drop the Fog of War system and implemented a Line of Sight that changes with the terrain elevation and the landscape. The two sides are totally heterogeneous in terms of design and units, and speaking of the units. To minimise micro-management which can be a chore with this many units and fast paced RTS action a new system was implemented, you can set the general attitude of your individual units. This regulates their rules of engagement and eagerness to fight. Top that with a simple and reliable waypoint system and you get the picture of how deep the gameplay is. All of that is driven by one of the best soundtracks in the history of RTS.

Buy it now only for $3.99 today and check out one of the best RTS games of all time!

KneeTheCap: Would it be better if I give codes in a contest in the future?
Your money, your codes, your choice on what to do with them. If you are generous enough and like giving away games then do it in whatever manner you wish. :)
Well I pulled the trigger on this one. It was on the wishlist and I have heard great things. I know have a RTS-alone backlog or about 10 games.

jamyskis: *snip*
However, on the flip side, I do find the vulture mentality that's developing as a result here to be quite disturbing. Over the past few weeks I've come on GOG to see new release or offer threads started off with a code and followed by numerous complaints that other people were too fast....

KneeTheCap: I give codes away because I want people to be happy, give away some joy. I've always enjoyed giving gifts, since I didn't really get any when I was a kid. So maybe it's just a soft spot for me, even though I might be easily exploitable :)

Would it be better if I give codes in a contest in the future?
that depends tbh, on A. what you feel best with and B. some people (twitter is REALLY BAD for this) hog and 'store' game codes to trade with other code 'storers' this could (not saying it will though) happen here

anywho bought the game, i hope tomorrow or mondays offer is desperados, heroes chronicles or heroes 4

Don't understand me wrong. I think your generosity is applaudible, even "vorbildlich" as we say in Germany (sorry, too lazy to get the dictionary out! :) )

But I do feel that your generosity may be going in the wrong direction in some cases. The number of times I've seen codes be used up without so much as a public thank you is troubling (not sure if you've receiving PMs to this effect), and I suspect that many of these codes are being snapped up by people who really could have afforded to buy the game themselves.

If you really feel the need to donate, here's an idea. Why not keep an eye out on the forums for people who seem genuine but are not particularly well-off financially? There are usually plenty of people who will say with a new release that they've wishlisted a game or will get it when they can afford it. That's usually a tell-tale sign that they're perhaps not all that well-off. Maybe you could have a look through their contributions on the forum and see whether they would really deserve and appreciate this kind of generosity? (Tip: Pick someone more tactful than me ;-) )

"KneeTheCap" !!!
With respect to something like this then don't listen to what other people think of what you do !
Do your own thing and be happy (try to rest within yourself) .
Ofcourse if your actions are motivated by personal problems of yours (and especially if you can't efford it) then you probably ought to take a look at these problems..... On the other hand then giving a few games away here isn't a huge price to pay to recognize that one have a problem if that is the case.....

"vorbildlich" ( using : http://translation.babylon.com/german/to-english/ ) :
exemplary, serving as a model or example, worthy of imitation, praiseworthy; ideal, perfect
(and I will throw in the modern "role-model like" as candidate)
(I understand most German rather well myself)

I agree that in general the least people ought to do would be to politely "say thanks". However I still think that "KneeTheCap", within reason and in a case like this, just should do his/her own thing and with respect to the "deserving" contra the the "less deserving" then I also think that that ough to be "KneeTheCap's" own decision. And b.t.w. then I don't think that there is any reason to turn the GOG.com forum into "a beggars ball".......
To free yourself of the TYRANI of the social expectations of others and "political correctness" I personally consider a work and a goal in itself !!!

amcdermo: Is this game hard?
It is a long time since I have played this game and I can hardly remember most of it , but I do not remember it as "difficult" .
It is ofcourse kind of "old fashioned" but if you , like I , likes the better of the GOOD "old fashioned" RTS games then I will recommend it to you. Please note that what one thinks is a GOOD RTS game is highly dependable on personal taste. In my eyes then "Total Annihilation: Commander Pack" is , considering its age , like the king of RTS games for that time period, but I still think that "Dark Reign" is nice and "playable". But ,as written, this is ofcourse highly dependable on personal taste. I know of one or more other games worth mentioning but can't remember the names of them (I got them stashed away somewhere).
