Thunderstone: If this sounds silly, feel free to ignore it and I apologize. But like I said, something (actually a couple things) in this thread has struck me as curious and I'd really like to know if anyone, even the OP, would be willing to indulge me.

ZMacZ: What does me coming from the Netherlands have to do with it ?
You are misrepresenting me.
I did not type that at all, if anyone were to follow my original post they would see that. Nor did I mention anything at all about you being from the Netherlands.

The only thing I said in my post was that this can not be done under gog's current model and then I provided some links to some free games.
avatar
tinyE: Yes but the thing is I don't know if I'll have $5 next month and on top of that I loathe being obligated to anyone.

I am way to tired to keep debating this. Besides I only ever debate when I'm wearing a mask, hence my name, The Masked Debater. Yeah that's a stupid joke but some of you will be telling it tomorrow.
At least you don't get into a lot of debates all at once... then you'd be a mass debator...

teshra: Curious about something....can someone from Netherlands ask the OP some questions about the Netherlands that are not easily google-able and would be known by someone who lives there?

I meant this one....
Sometimes the quotes fail me i guess..

And on that topic...a tree in here would be nice...
(that's when replies to a reply to the orginal topic would be placed sideways..the further you'd get from the initial reply..)

ZMacZ: If your game collection would be as huge as mine was (and will be) you'd be concerned
with having the play rights and capability to download them whenever..
Whether or not you can play them WITH or WITHOUT play managers...(like ORIGIN, where I also have an account)
I don't care about the managers...just if MY software WILL be available for download when I need it back for WHATEVER
reason..and THAT is worth $5 a month to me..in the worst case I'd have a stack of cash on
here to spend on a new game..
Why should i be concerned? I'm not even concerned about my 600+ games on Steam, and that's much worse than GOG, since most games need Steam to run.

GOG doesn't have DRM, you can just download your games and make backups copies in any way you want. You can burn a CD, DVD, use a pen drive, use an external HD.

No, no, and no, i'm not concerned and i surely wouldn't pay a monthly fee to BUY games.

You want a real collection without any future concerns? Buy physical games.

I guess you never read what I said before ?
I DID...and lost 'em.....so now my greatest concern is keeping them when I buy them yet again..
And burning and storing copies ?....useless.....
avatar
ZMacZ: I lost a gems collection of 6000+...
I payed $20 a month to keep them safe...insurance..
When it was lost I got ZERO refund...
So yea....I'm not to eager to invest again, only to see the site go to great server in the sky...
Do you mind if i ask you how you lost 6000+ games overnight?

You paid for insurance ang got nothing back? Hmmm, the basic principle of insurance is to be refunded in case something happens.

I'm sincerely curious.

ZMacZ: So...if you never bought anything here and simply wanna make comments for comments sake ?...STFU !!!
(And yes...I didn't buy anything yet, cause I'm concerned with the way things are run here...)
( If you don't even spend $5 a month on here ===> Who caress what you think ?? Go nag elsewhere )
Well then, shouldn't you be following you're own advice and either "STFU" or be nagging elsewhere?

ZMacZ: 'snip
np, you confused me. I usually just hit the reply button to straight quote somebody.

I can only speak for myself, but the main thing that makes me nervous is the idea of drm being introduced onto this site. Which is something that would have to done under a subscription model. It is refreshing to see a business trying to be friendly towards their customer base and willing to trust that we aren't dirty pirates.

I believe that gog would still try to keep it consumer friendly, but I am nervous about publisher's using this to twist their arm into introducing more drm into their catalog or introducing "subscription exclusive" games. Introducing drm, especially with how vocal they are against it would open up cries of hypocritical.

I did get what you were saying about this being optional, but the slippery slope does concern me. I would hate to see gog going down that path.

It works for me, I back up all my games. Quite handy. :)

ZMacZ: Also...STEAM nowadays is 'economizing' by removing games from their catalog...
Imagine my surprise...
Do you have any source for this? As far as i'm aware every game that was ever removed from Steam had some kind of licensing issue. Valve doesn't remove games from the catalog on their own, they remove games when publishers ask them to do so. The only game Valve has removed from it's catalog without the consent of the publisher that i'm aware of was War Z because of false advertising.

And even when Valve does remove games from it's store, they don't remove it from their servers, which means you can still download them. By the way, i can still download my NWN2 copy from Steam, even though the game is not available in the store anymore.

Fesin: I just saw that the OP was low rated.
Seriously, you guys?

I mean, sure, it was a stupid idea, but there wasn't any malicious thought or something. He definitely didn't deserve to get down-repped for this.

tinyE: That is bad. Everyone has bad ideas from time to time. Just tee off on him like I did, there is no need to derep.
Guam? Where in the world is tinyE?

Carmen anyone? ;-p

yah.....well..at first I contacted the insurance and told them how many games I had and if
there was a problem if those being insured..and they said no problem...
I even took pictures and sent them those...
Still...no problem...
Then when I got unlawfully evicted (without grounds..no back rent or anything) the guy who owned the building,
threw everything in the trash...I didn't find out for a month about that...
So...stuff gone...and no leg to stand on...
Insurance ===>>> nada...

So now...I'd like to see some sort of reaasurance to KEEP my stuff....really..
The bed ? worth $100 tops...the computers $1000 tops...the fridge and all that ? likewise..
but the $30.000 software collection ? ..omfg yea...this time I want a server saying that it's mine..
FOREVER !!!

(and yes...no kidding about the $30.000...it ranged all the way back to vintage floppies..with the paper maps..and collectibles.. .)

Valve also "removed" (actually hid) Codename Gordon when the hard coded website address included in the game linked to an anime porn site. They didn't remove that one with the developers permission =)

But yes, you're generally correct. Games are removed from Steam and even GOG due to licensing issues, legal issues, publisher request, technical issues, and so forth.

ZMacZ: Edited out silly comment about zombies.
Sorry, did you say something? I was too busy playing my 120 odd games bought on GOG to hear you.

low rated
@bansama
- files reply under zombie...

@thunderstone
It's not about DRM...
It's about the ability to download the software whenever....
And to keep it available to the people who bought it..
And.did you ever try backing up floppy software ?

Besides ruining the magnetic content while doing so.....PAIN !!!
Same goes for other copy protected materials...and they are NOT always reliable,
contrary to popular belief...

@neob10
I seen something on that somewhere, which caused me great distress...
I have been buying stuff online since my mishap, so when I saw something like that
about STEAM, I went haywire....and I'm pretty sure I'm right about it...
