Hey there. I haven't been able to find any solutions to my problem on the forums here, so hopefully someone could help.

I know some of you can't stand having a 4:3 game stretched to widescreen, but I like having a game stretched to fill the whole screen, and I really haven't noticed much distortion in the games. So, please help!

I have been playing Caesar 3 and Duke Nukem 3D on Windows Vista, with a ATI mobility Radeon HD3650. While I had Vista, the games worked perfectly fine and stretched to full screen. However, I just upgraded and reformatted my laptop to Win 7 32bit. Now if I change the resolution to a lower 4:3 resolution in any circumstance (GOG games included) it doesn't stretch the display anymore - instead it shows it in 4:3 withh the black bars down the sides.

I don't know if it's Windows 7, or the new ATI Catalyst drivers that are doing this, but I dislike playing the games with black bars down the side. :(

Please help!

LobarCybertonic: snip
It's Catalyst. Dig around in its settings, there will be an option for stretching 4:3 images.

In my AMD VISION Engine Control Center, it should be the My Digital Flat Panel Properties > Enable GPU Scaling > Scale image to full panel size option. Or something like that.

Haven't had to fool with this myself, but my Catalyst control center has a tab marked "My Digital Flat Panels" with a sub-tab labeled "Properties (Digital Flat Panel)". In the sub-tab is a box labeled "Image Scaling" which might (?) provide what you're after if you tick "Enable GPU Scaling" and select "Maintain aspect ratio".

Edit: Ninja'd!

He wants to stretch it actually.

I have an old ATI video card with an old driver, so the wording may be different.
The three options I have under "Enable GPU scaling" are:
1- Mantain aspect ratio
2- Scale image to full panel size
3- Use centered timings

From the screenshot I suppose your card is currently set to the first option above, what you want should be the second one.

EDIT: what bazilisek said, basically.

Garglwarglbargl. Wow, ninja'd AND I'm displaying poor reading comprehension. Yes, clearly OP wants to scale to full size. Thanks.
Thanks guys for the quick responses!

I'm still struggling though. I searched the driver utility for something to stretch the screen, but there was nothing. The closest I could find is what I've taken a screenshot of. It says scaling options > full screen or centered. Full screen is selected, but it's greyed out which means I can't manually change it. I'm not sure if it's due to the fact that my laptop monitor shows up as Unknown monitor in the catalyst utility.

I hope someone can help, I know this isn't a dedicated technical forum, like some other websites. I just don't feel like going through the hassle of registering to a thousand different sites to find the answer to this!

Thanks!!

Ah great! I figured it out! I just had to change to the lower 4:3 resolution before I could select to stretch it to full screen!

Thanks for the help guys!! Now to get back to gaming!
I highly, *highly* suggest using eDuke32 to run Duke Nukem 3D. It gives you better controls, the ability to run DN3D in true widescreen, and (optionally, I'm not a fan) allows you to change the graphics to be more modern.

Not minding the distortion is one thing, but not noticing it? Is your eyesight ok? ;)
I was having a similar issue. Thanks for the question and answers, very useful :)
