I would expect it to be some sort of deal with publishers based on retail prices.
Almost all new games for me are cheaper bought at a retail store, on from Amazon, Play.com or similar.
If I could stomach steam, I would only be there for the offers and older stuff.

Not really, or at least I've yet to see anything that I'd like to play that I couldn't get direct from the developers website. Unless you had any recommendations, but I expect there is a thread for that somewhere.

Weclock: Albanians are poor and their money is worth less than American money, to them $30 albanian is very expensive.

If it is profitable to sell to them at that price, then it's profitable to sell to everyone else at that price. I think it makes much more sense to sell at an international low price. As it stands, almost all the prices on steam are just silly - I can almost always find a better deal elsewhere, so I do. Digital distribution has no excuse to be more expensive than retail, you're getting less product for more cost.
Fuck Steam. I use it, but I couldn't believe it when I wanted to buy the Act of War games. Damn regional restrictions. Don't get me started about GTA. Can't even buy them on Steam as well.
you mean fuck Rockstar right michealleung?

And EA.
And Deepsilver.
Amirite?
I've got nothing against Steam or Impulse, but I understand that people don't want it. Even I get annoyed by it. Like with F.E.A.R. 2 and Lost Planet. But one thing I do like about it, is that it usually keeps the games up to date, though that can also get a bit annoying if the change log reveals to have nothing of interest, and I just want to play the damn game.

A game is profitable if the money gotten by sale exceeds the development cost. So if they can get an extra 10$ from everyone else they will take it. The pricing is always about what customer expect to pay and how many copies they are going to sell. And there is hardly any cost associated with a didgital sale, thats why we see games for 6$ on gog. So its really not about a single sale being profitable but the big picture.
Oh and there are 2 major reasons for digital copy are usually more expensive than retails:
If the online store is owned by the publisher of the game they are bound to sell it at he full price, at least for some time, to not piss off the retail stores to which they are also selling the game. because else they would be competing with their customers. not a good idea.
if a game is not selling well enough, a retailer will always drop the price tag because storing the excess copys will cost him more than selling it at a lower price.
online stores didnt got this problem.
That's all a lie!
They pay less because they are worth less.

The formula goes thus: Steam price = retail price * 1.2. And on top of that, you get no physical media, no cover, no manual, and you have your game tied to a completely superfluous and buggy third-party application, that may or may not allow you to play the game, depending on how it's feeling that day. What a deal!

Gee, when you put it like that, it makes me wonder what I have against steam in the first place!

Fluofish: I've grown tired about the DRM hysteria. I bet alot of people just scream along without really knowing why it should bother them.
Bad coding, unwanted and often crappy localisation, censorship, million-different edition syndrome and shitty multi/ solo play balancing has ruined more games for me than DRM has ever done so far.
not so much bashing, but can anyone explain the DRM on gamersgate or playgreenhouse?
I read that Braid doesn't have DRM on impulse or gamersgate, but it didn't mention greenhouse. I thought a service like gamersgate was more likely to have DRM than greenhouse.
What about other games? I have no idea if its safe to buy from any of these services, or what i'd end up contracting...
Gamersgate is like D2D, it's the "raw" game from the publishers, unlike Steam which has their own GCFs and things. Whatever DRM is on the disc versions, it's on the Gamersgate games.
