Take it out Micheal. You don't know where his mouth has been. =P

Oh, we can't have that, now can we?

I'm not!

No I'm not!

NO! And this doesn't sound like Weclock I know at all!

Actually... That sounded more like Weclock I know

Hey, I'm not against off-topic, not at all! (as you can see). I like naturally flowing conversation.
However, discussion about Steam and Impulse killed oh so many discussions about games that could have turned out to be great - and I'm closing most of them before I'm even finished reading topics, because they're full of arguments I'm seeing for bizilionth time, countered by counter-arguments I've seen even more.
Besides, off-topic is one thing, but completely derailing the topic, burying any meaningful opinion about the game in truckload of stuff that has already been discussed so many times is something completely else, ESPECIALLY when one and the same discussion is taking place in multiple topics at one time. You know, discussion forums are not the same as natural conversation - the latter isn't 'saved' anywhere and when new one arrives, he just catches on whatever's talking about - he doesn't see topic 'Torchlight' to see conversation about DRM. And then some other topic where he finds ... Well, conversation about DRM. Is it really so hard to click a few times and move conversation somewhere else? It can STAY natural, interesting and won't spoil anything.

The thing is, though, it typically takes two people to actually have any kind of discussion. Now, if the typical situation were anti-DRM folks just spamming up every thread despite everyone else trying to just ignore them then I'd be right with you condemning such behavior. However, what typically happens is someone mentions DRM with respect to some game (whether to ask what it is, state they're not planning to buy the game because of the DRM, or state which distribution method they will or won't buy the game from due to DRM), then someone else feels the need to respond, often to criticize the topic of DRM even being brought up, and from there the topic derailment takes off. Other times the initial post on DRM is followed by a multipost bitch-fest about how DRM shouldn't be being discussed, which actually does more to derail the topic than the initial post ever could have (you commented on this phenomenon yourself in the Torchlight thread).
Of course what it comes down to is most people simply aren't willing to let comments pass, and feel some kind of need to respond to anything that rubs them the wrong way, even if the discussion has already been had multiple times before and derails the topic. Naturally neither you, me, nor anyone else can do much to change this behavior in others, all that can be done is to recognize such behavior in ourselves and hold back on postings that we feel ultimately wouldn't be particularly worthwhile. If enough people do the same, then there won't be an issue anymore. And while we're at it we can also go ahead and wish for world peace (hey, if we're going to be doing wishful thinking we might as well be thinking big).

Again, what constitutes off topic? If it is so wrong to discuss DRM (if the topic flowed into it, as phoenix described), then this thread is horrible as well. You aren't bashing Steam or Impulse. So by your logic, michaellung should have made an entirely new thread to just make the obligatory naughty joke. And you should have made an entirely new thread to comment that you think DRM counts as off topic.
Seriously, just ignore the posts you don't like. And if it really pains you so much to see discussion of other digital distribution services and DRM, maybe hanging out at the official message board of a DRM-free digital distribution service isn't the best idea :p. I am not (just) trying to be funny. I love PnP rpgs and tabletop gaming, but I still avoid Wizards of the Coast's forums because the discussions tend to not be things I like (loopholes in the rules and builds).
It is like you said, we are a community moderated board. The downside to that is that the community gets to pick what is acceptable discussion and what isn't. The alternative is to have very strict mods (like most other message boards) who determine what people can and cannot discuss (and warn people for having "off topic" conversations that the topic creator himself started).

And you are right as usual :-) Oh, I DO wish for world peace :D
Also, I really hope if I talk about it a bit, at least SOME people will stop completely burrying topics about games by talk about DRM.

We're... Kind of starting to move in circles here, so let's call it a day ... A discussion? ... Err, let's just quit it :D
I have it on good authority that Steam eats babies.

To be honest I am not sure what threads are being "completely" buried by DRM talk.
However, it is ironic that "SOME" people who want a conversation to stop on a given topic (e.g. DRM) are the ones that actually keep it going.

Of course, in another topic, rather than spread all over the place. I don't want to STOP DRM talk, but I don't want to read it everywhere I stick my nose to.
Gamersgate is fucking slow. It took me just under 24 hours to download Just Cause. Maybe it's just me, but come on!
