That's where Kickstarter starts to get exciting. If sales are good enough to allow an indie developer to keep that status, that's a good thing. I hope they put that money first of all towards making Shadowrun Returns bigger and better and then towards a new IP that would allow them to create games without the need for a license.

Regarding position on top sellers - are the keys for backers and pre-orders included in the count or is it strictly new purchases?

Weird question. Was it because IP was licensed from MS, which prevented the dev's from offering a drm free alternative to the steam workshop for drm free backers?
And yes, it was because of MS that they couldn't sell that DRM free version to anyone else.

The DRM-free version is basically a born dead version, it's only available to a very limited number of users who also happen to have access to the "official" Steam version anyway. So it's most likely the devs are only going to spend the minimum amount of time and money supporting this version.
I haven't tried (canceled my pledge a some time ago) but it's possible that the mods works for both version , so technically it would be possible to have other sites hosting SR mods that could be used by the DRM-free. But of course that would only work as long as both version are "synchronized", as in that that there is no exclusive assets/features in the Steam version.

I see.
In theory mods can be made for the DRM free version and hosted anywhere, however, I can't see that getting much traction considering that most people can only use the Steam version.
The fact is that the devs decided that since they couldn't make the DRM free version available to everyone, they might as well focus only on the Steam one. I can't really blame them, tbh.

All I remember is the one I played on Snes back in the day I think, didn't even know there was a tabletop. I just saw the TBS style gameplay and knew I had to have it. Same reason I'm interested in Warmachine Tactics Kickstarter :)

Most of all though, my internet went out on the last day of the Summer Sale, so I wasn't able to buy all those games I had been waiting until the last day for. That, combined with what I made by selling trading cards on the market, meant I was itching to spend some money and buy something. Shadowrun just fit the bill.
Honestly, I wasn't that crazy about it when I bought it, it's now having played the game that it has truly gotten a hold of me.

Yes the dialogue "choices" in SRR are mostly flavor, you usually don't have a choice at all (and you're given 4 different ways of saying "Yes" or "Go on..") or you have two choices, but they give you 2 ways of saying Yes and 3 ways of saying No. After replaying SRR with a new Decker character I came to this conclusion because I often made different dialogue choices and yet got the same reply from the NPC.

I'll have to say, this game is dire need of a codex. As someone unfamiliar with the Shadowrun universe I'm left confused about a lot of the history and particulars of it. There is a Shadowrun wiki, but sadly it is lacking.
