Yep for those of you who haven't been keeping up, Section 8 is an FPS that's not unlike Tribes. From trailers, it looks a lot like Tribes, evolved into the modern era. Frankly, I've been quite sick of the huge litter of realistic first person shooters. Ever since ETQW, there hasn't really been an "arcady" multiplayer FPS that's appealed to me. Section 8 looks like it may just fill the void. Check out some of the trailers here:

Note that the open beta doubles as a demo, so many features have been disabled or removed (including two excellent maps). The game was a lot more balanced and enjoyable during the closed beta. Hopefully TimeGate will release a proper demo later on, because at the moment the open beta plays like a different game, and an inferior one at that.

god I hate tribes fans!!! I've never actually played the game, but the way they go on and on about it and try to compare everything to it, then blast it to pieces when it doesn't have the exact same exploits and bugs!!!! grrr!!!!

From what i hear section8 is great, but it's not really very tribes-like, in anything but looks. So i'd recommend going in without expecting it to be tribes... otherwise (see above).
anyway, isn't Fallen Legions basically Tribes? Plus free to play. Plus made by some of the original devs?

Well, it certainly isn't intuitive, I'll say that much. It's confusing as hell, and I have no idea what the actual purpose is, other than taking control points, and I have no idea how to do that either.

Well, this reminds me of Tribes 2, and I hated Tribes 2, so mission accomplished, I guess...

Off the top of my head... the Bomb and Outpost DCM missions, the Heavy Tank, AA Turret and Sensor Array deployables, the Det Pack equipment, and two excellent maps (Stormfront and Edge of Oasis).
Maybe this will help you. :) Section 8's main game mode is like all game modes in one. Holding control points gradually earns points over time for each point held, but it is just as important to complete Dynamic Combat Missions (DCMs) and prevent the enemy from completing theirs. Completing a mission earns many more points than holding control points does, so you can't just hold the points to win; preventing the enemy from completing a mission earns your team half of that mission's point value. Missions are spawned once your team has enough DCM Feat points (press F5 during play to see details about this), and the manner in which people are playing determines what sort of missions are spawned.
Note that the final game will use Games for Windows Live, not GameSpy.

Guess I'll give it a try, then! After all, maybe it'll be different enough from Tribes 2 that I will actually enjoy myself.

The mode seems to be inspired from Killzone 2, because that's extremely similar to the way that game's multiplayer works.
I'm actually pleasantly surprised that I enjoy this demo. I'm kind of interested in picking this up now.
