A brilliant combination of sci-fi movie and pulse-pounding space fighter sim, Wing Commander IV is a pinnacle of gaming excellence

Even though in the game the price of freedom is eternal vigilance, the price of Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom is only $5.99 on GOG.com.

Colonel Christopher Blair, former savior of the Confederation, has hung up his spurs and retired as a farmer on a desert world. While Blair has been enjoying the start of his well-earned retirement, a new menace has surfaced. Tensions between the outer colonies and inner Confed worlds are higher than ever. As the newly-reactivated Colonel Blair, you have to decide how to save the Confederation--or if it should be saved at all.

At the time of its release, it was the largest and most expensive video game made yet with an over-the-roof budget of $12 million. The cast was filled with SF superstars like Mark Hamill as Christopher Blair, John Rhys-Davies as James "Paladin" Taggart, Thomas F. Wilson as Todd "Maniac" Marshall, and Malcolm McDowell as Admiral Geoffrey Tolwyn. Once again, this ragged band of heroes has to save the galaxy. The Wing Commander series captured perfectly the feeling of being both a game and a movie, and Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom is arguably the most cinematic and epic game of the whole series.

The space combat is everything you expect from a WC game. It’s fast, it’s action-packed, and it’s varied, while missions range from tailing enemy ships or sneaking on an enemy base to detaining convoys and simple “kill the bad guy” battles. The music matches the game’s production value and supports the experience well. Overall, Wing Commander IV is a great addition to an excellent franchise, and will deliver a captivating experience for long-time fans and newcomers alike.

Pick up this masterpiece for just $5.99 right now on GOG.com and enjoy a true classic of PC gaming.

A shout-out goes to WC News for all the help they gave the GOG.com team of content-wranglers in getting the extra goodies together that you're enjoying with the release, as well as helping us source a our game master & the DVD videos! WBGhiro: Can we now stop complaining about how gog has abandoned old games ? ;D

Also 6,4 G, that's quite a heavyweight.
YES!

Thank you GOG!

tburger: Hell YES! DVD Edition for 5.99$ !!! Who is setting those prices? :-)
When I just get home...

timppu: As a game I dislike Wing Commander 4, but I might actually get it for the DVD-quality videos... I own the basic CD-ROM version with grainy videos.
Me - quite the contrary I enjoyed playing WC4 very much and in my book it's one of the best space-sims I've ever played. Also have this 6CD version - I think in Poland the only way to buy DVD version was to purchase this Creative DVD-ROM/PCI video accelerator card - and the price was ca 1000 PLN (a bit under my monthly payment in that time).
Even if GOG would set WC4 for 9.99 it would be instabuy.

This.

Seriously after a big release like this. Anyone who complains about the new GOG now is mad. (unless we are talking the new layout cause even though I don't mind it, I can see that is more of a preference thing as opposed to a mix of Paranoia, impatience and pessimism.)

6.4 GB for only $6. Once again, GOG is forgiven. But i don't expect people will stop complaining. Last week, i admit was the lowest of the low. I mean name-calling, swearing, not the usual friendly GOG community.

That is how I got it also in the US. To think that we used to need accelerator cards for DVD. Now when I watch a DVD on my 2600K my CPU says Zero percent utilization.. HAHA
Instantly added to my "If I win the weekly giveaway" list! Just gotta finish 1-3 now :)

Yeah, YMMV etc... I just felt the harder missions left a bad taste into my mouth quite often, I didn't get similar sense of accomplishment as in e.g. hard Star Wars and Tie Fighter missions. With some WC4 missions it felt I was not making any progress at all no matter how many times I tried, then bam the enemies do some stupid mistake (like three of them crashing together) and I win the mission by a stroke of luck, just because I replayed the mission so many times. WC4 almost killed my interest to space combat sims, which used to be my favourite genre.

That's just how I remember it, but maybe a replay with the DVD version will change my mind. Some of the FMV discussion parts were quite interesting, e.g. in the end.

Great price for such a big classic, though.

Okay, so I take back what I said in the Machinarium thread, I love you GOG, marry me.

Does Mark Hamill reappear in this one?

Yes, he does. Quite a number of people from WC 3 returning for this one.

gameon: Is wing commander 3 hard?
You can set the difficulty. If you set it to easy, it is almost too easy (at least for me) and I really suck! :-p

gameon: Is wing commander 3 hard?
On a keyboard yeah, I found it difficult. Also, is this the DOS version?
avatar
Aliasalpha: (thats not a metaphor)
avatar
Miaghstir: I can't think of anyone else who would need to clarify that.
Well I've not been around for a while, who (other than me) knows if it was boredom with forums, depression or possibly gender reassignment surgery

Oh.. Did not think about that. I had a joystick and it was super easy on easy. I think with a keyboard it would be very difficult.
