Warning: May contain crystal skulls!

La Mulana, a challenging free-form platformer in ancient Mayan ruins, is now available on GOG.com for only $9.99. That's 33% off the regular price until Thursday, October 11 at 10:59 AM GMT.

The ancient Mayan city of La-Mulana is said to hold innumerous secrets. The mysterious tribe guarding it from the outside world claims that the ancient knowledge locked within the forgotten tombs holds the key to understanding the purpose and origin of life itself. A daring young archeologist by the name of Lameza Kosugi--an Indiana Jones lookalike with Japanese roots--takes on the quest to unravel the mystery of the foreboding ruins. With his trusty whip (standard archeology-issue) and a vintage "Mobile Super X" laptop, he ventures into the unknown. Some say that he might be the chosen one. Otherwise the tribe of protectors wouldn't let him go anywhere near the ruins. True question remains: does he really have what it takes to face the treacherous traps, menacing monsters, and gigantic guardians of La-Mulana?

The original low-res version of La Mulana met with critical acclaim as one of the most difficult and elaborate indie platformers of the 2000s. Its high-res remake delivers the same challenge and scale but this time with colorful pixel-art graphics your eyes can feast upon. Gamers worldwide fell in love with La-Mulana's free-form archeological action/exploration gameplay. Now it's your turn to put on an adventurer's hat, grab that handy whip, and set off for the huge Mayan ruins, that hold the secret of the origin of life on Earth. Don't miss out on one of the greatest challenges for the fans of platformer genre!

Search every corner of the ancient ruins, reach seemingly unreachable platforms, and defeat many fearsome guardians to uncover the secret of La Mulana, for the launch promo price of only $9.99!

RafaelLopez: The graphics look amazing and polished, and the game mechanics look quite innovative. A pity this isn't a PSP game, I'm not playing PC platformers.
I used a PS2 controller and a USB-adapter, worked perfectly.

What's wrong with a platformer on the PC? If anything it's better because you can choose between keyboard or a controller.

Yeah, sounds like the best way to play this and many games on PC, like sports games or racing.

Nothing wrong, I'm just not playing. My spare time to play is always very limited so I tend to pick up only games my favorite one or two genres, is all (specially on the PC).
La-Mulana is an “Archaeological Ruin Exploration Action Game” in the vein of classic MSX platformers.
I never thought there was a classic MSX platformer, let alone a "vein" of those. Sure there are good platformers, but I don't think their best titles were MSX exclusives or originals.

Too bad I spent what I had left on a bundle. I guess I know what to buy next when I can.

doady: Sigh... yet another low-res 2D game with hi-res text.

Dear indie developers,

Can you nix the hi-res text please? If you want to make a game with hi-res text, then make all the artwork hi-res too. Otherwise, stop compromising your glorious retro 2D visuals. Thanks.

SirPrimalform: I feel your pain, mixed resolutions bug the hell out of me too.
I, too, love straining my eyes until they bleed, especially in a text-heavy game. I totally feel your pain, guys!

Go see an eye doctor. Maybe then your eyes wouldn't have to bleed while to trying to play all the old games on GOG that were made before the advent of high resolution displays. Because you are missing out on a lot of great games. Though with your bleeding eye problem, it baffles me that you even bothered to join GOG in the first place.

I know, hyperboles are fun, aren't they? :D
Look, the math is easy:
Crisp, hi-res text > pixelated, jagged text. In the long run, at least.

edit: Oh, and thanks for the concern. I'm fine with lo-res stuff if I don't have a choice and the game's awesome enough. Tissues and chamomile extract all help with the eye bleeding.

Text looks fine at 320x240, how else did anyone play all those old LucasArts and Sierra adventures? They were pretty text heavy. If you find low resolution text hard to read you should probably get your eyes checked, especially since it's usually bigger at a low resolution.
Oh lordy.

See attached pic. That's how the inventory screen, and more or less the rest of the game, looks stretched to full screen.
Would you really prefer the text to be as pixelated as the rest? Like the counters in the top-right, for example?

I disagree. "fine" is just that. Hi-res text makes it great.

Argument against poor eye sight is well...rather poor. Just because people have different taste doesn't mean they're dysfunctional in some specific way.

Now I can't speak for Pemptus but I never found low res text hard to read, only annoying compared to hi-res regardless of the game or quality of the game in other areas.

Hah, certainly not but then what they've used up there in the corner simply isn't a clear font. There are plenty of clear fonts of that sort of size though.

He wasn't just stating he disliked it, he was implying it caused him discomfort (using hyperbole, but the implication was still that he found it an uncomfortable experience). That does point to an eye problem and not simply a difference in opinion.

Anyway, I never specifically said I prefer low-resolution fonts, simply that resolution mismatch bugs me. In some later Sierra adventures you used to get the games running at 640x400 with the backgrounds at 2x320x200 and the cursor and other interface elements at 640x400. That annoying me is simply a matter of aesthetics, it doesn't make my eyes hurt.

Wow I was looking at this recently, wasn't expecting to see it here. The reviews I read compare it heavily to Symphony of the Night - to those who already own it, does it really compare?

Well, it is in the same vein. It's much, much more difficult, and there isn't any xp grind. In fact, the difficulty is one of its greatest strengths - every significant bit of progress feels like an awesome reward.
You also have a whip, so that's kind of Castelvanish too, I guess.

I've only played a little bit, but I think the music has some serious Castlevania vibes as well. Great stuff. :)
I was unsure of signing up for another site just to buy this remake, but thinking "If it was on GOG I definitely would!" And now here it is. Now I have to buy and enjoy it, darn you GOG.
