Rohan15: Picture this:
You are in control of 4 Russian soldiers. Their goal is to board a train with one of their informants. Catch is, the enemy numbers are around 30+ and have 3 mounted guns and a tank. Have fun.
You get to manage their equipment, control them, it is pretty damn fun.

JonhMan: Sounds pretty intense... I'm guessing it's very micromanagement heavy?

Not really. It's very manageable. I hate heavy micromanagement in any RTS, and Soldiers is still one of my favorite games. Definitely a good recommendation, but with a few warnings: 1. you have to think tactically to really enjoy it; 2. it's quite challenging, specially if you forget warning #1.
Let me give you some other examples of how great the game is. In a certain mission, I had to retrieve something from an area guarded by an armored car - and I was out of anti-armor weaponry. Then, it ocurred to me - maybe, if I throw a (regular) grenade under the car, the explosion might not destroy it, but it may be enough to flip it over.
Guess what? It was. The armored car was not destroyed, but it was now sideways and unable to move, and the line of fire of its turret was such that I could get inside the building and retrieve my objective with no risk to my soldiers. Later that mission, I found some anti-armor grenades, and finally took the car out of its misery - but the "flip the car" moment (and the realization that you can indeed think outside the box in this game) was the one that made me fall in love with the game.
In another mission, I had to face a light tank with no anti-tank weapons or grenades. As I wondered how I could beat it (or get past it), I noticed some fuel barrels in the general area. I retrieved them, and positioned them next to a house, around a corner (in a way the tank wouldn't see it until it made the turn), and used one of my soldiers as bait. The tank followed my soldier as he dodged in and out of sight, going behind the house. As the tank turned the corner, I used another soldier to shoot at the fuel barrels. The explosion knocked the tank out (and destroyed the house too), allowing me to progress.

Thinking??!?!? I HATE THINKING IN MAH VIDEO GAMES...
Just kidding. I'm going to have to buy Soldiers now...
Isn't Men of War the sequel to Soldiers? Is Soldiers anything like that?
Because I tried the demo of Men of War, and quite frankly found it flesh-rippingly unlikeable.

You will love it. Especially when you play the first mission of the (British? I forgot...) Side. Basically you have only 2 men and have to take out a couple of anti air guns. And a little hint:
Matches+ Fields full of guards= FUN.

Soldiers has two sequels, actually - Faces of War and Men of War. The sequels are similar, but the games changed focus from commando-like missions (in Soldiers) to large scale skirmishes (Men of War), with Faces of War somewhere in between. Soldiers is much less frantic and more manageable than Men of War - more "cerebral", so to speak.

I might like it better, then. Unless the voice acting makes me want to strangle myself with my own spine - that was a big chunk of why I found MoW so unpleasant.
Original War is great, but not really fast-paced. However, for a good story and originality, you could hardly find a better strategy game. +1 for OW from me.
Also, what about Command & Conquer games?
Uuu, and Stronghold! It doesn't have most of your points sadly, but the game is just too unique. You're basically just building defence and defending your castles - if you do it right, you don't really need to micromanage your units.

If you're looking for a excellent "old school" RTS, you should really take a look at Total Annihilation. This game is considered by many (myself included) to be the spiritual forefather of Supreme Commander.
The single player campaign has 25 missions and over 150 different units for each side! The game also supports a fairly small but equally rabid online community as well.
Come check us out at www.tauniverse.com. Here you'll find a huge sellection of custom maps available for download (including a few by yours truely) as well as new units, patches, strategies, cheats and plenty of links for online muliplayer games.
If you're interested, see ya there.
