I rather embarrassed...

I've owned my PS3 for over a year now, and I've never hooked it up to teh interwebz...

Should I? Is there any practical use for it? I know the multiplayer is free (I hope..), but is there a big chance of accidentally purchasing anything? What info does the machina need when I make an account for PSN?

I'm sorry for such stupid questions, but this is uncharted territory for me...
Sure it has a practical use. Having your personal information stolen is always practical :))
Now that was just mean. I know chances of that happening again are slim.

Personally I have a PS3 for about 7 months now, didn't and still don't feel the need to connect to PSN. I'm not into multiplayer games so PSN is just not for me. And if by any chance you have your console jailbroken you need to give that up and update to the latest firmwire if you want to connect to PSN.
The multiplayer is free, and you also get access to patches.

I don't remember exactly what info you need to sign up, but at least date of birth, e-mail, and post address, although you can fake it if you feel the need to.

I don't think there is any chance of accidentally purchasing anything, but there are certainly some good games on offer on store that you might want to take advantage of.

I don't have a PSN account and I seem to remember Heavenly Sword downloading the last updates without problem. It's the last game I played on it so I remember it better than some others, and it's old enough to need updates.

Maybe, but he still needs to hook it up to the internet for that.

Aren't you forgetting something?
Home is also free!!!!1
the psn is pretty much useless unless you want to play online for some trophies, i gave my first account region as India lol almost everything is region limited :X ps home, almost nothing can be accessed.
a tip always give us as the region if you want to access everything properly :D
The reason why you want psn if not for the multiplayer is for downloading games videos and demo's.
I really like PSN. The PSN store (at least for the PS3 paraphernalia, DLC and games) is grossely overpriced so I don't use it that much, but I have bought some PSOne classics I HAD to have and replay, and I will buy a few more once I play all these I've bought and have some money for spending.

Other than that, some games' multiplayer is simply great, like RDR and Uncharted.
Hmm, well is there any negatives about hooking the machine to the PSN?
Well, obviously you can't jailbreak it if past a certain update (last time I checked almost a year ago you couldn't if it was update 3.40 I think, whereas as we speak PSN has reached update 3.66), and there have been some reports of PS3s that have crashed or died after updating. Other than that, 3 months ago PSN was breached and supposedly a lot of personal information was stolen so you may want to use a card that you can control, one that you can top up yourself - or you can use PSN vouchers and top up that way if you decide to use the PSN store, it's safer than using a card.

Other than that, the multiplayer and the automatic updater for the games are reasons enough to connect to PSN, even if you don't want to buy anything.
The only usefulness of PSN is for Multiplayer gaming and Trophys. Beside that, is usefull if you live in a country that have a import tax of almost 200% and have to buy your games online, that helps.
You need to supply some personal info (e-mail, name, etc.) but you can fake it if you want.

There's several good games available on the PSN, especially the PS1 classics. And yeah, online MP is free.

Jailbreak?

And the update may kill the console...nice...

I haven't really played much multiplayer, and I don't know if the games I own have any good online multi.

But apparently if I connect the L.A. Noire I can get something called "naked city".. Or at least I have a code for it, whatever it may be..

KneeTheCap: Jailbreak?
I had heard a story from an old army friend whom I haven't talked to since we were discharged - he supposedly bought a custom USB-stick-like thingy from Hong Kong I think, he used to plug in the console and then the console could play pirate copies of games without any problem. For it to work though the console had to be under the 3.38 or 3.40 update, as Sony disables this thingy's ability with each update. I dunno any more details though.
