It's not so much how they see things. You have to consider what the actual, measurable difference between a shitty publisher and a great one is - shareholders.
EA, Activision, Ubisoft and co. regularly go on these anti-gamer crusades because they need to give their shareholders the impression that they are creating value for them. They also need a scapegoat, because it hasn't helped that the market has been on a perpetual downslide in the past five years.
Sales have been in a state of perpetual decline on the consoles. The elimination of used sales and the supposed reduction in piracy on PC havn't translated into real gains, despite increases in unit sales.
