It seems that you're using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don't work at all).
We suggest you upgrade newer and better browser like: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer or Opera

Every time I play a video, it starts normally and at some point the image freezes, then audio replays the last 5 seconds and then it proceeds normally (or to put it differently, it lags 5 seconds). After a few seconds it happens again and then the video plays normally until the end. It is annoying so any help would be appreciated. I repeat, it always happens twice per video.

(I hope you understand what the problem is, it's quite hard to write it)

Weird, for me that bug happens with YT streams in Vlc 2.1.1. (I still have to upgrade).
Have you tried running stuff like Spybot etc. You may have some spyware on your PC.
First thing to check is to see if the Flash software is up to date.
Can be cause by your gpu (install the latest drivers), update your adobe/flash player, or it can be caused by the browser. Which one do you use? Make sure the flash plugins are up to date. Does it happen with all the browsers? If not reinstall the browser (make sure you back up your bookmarks).

I'm experiencing the same thing. For me, it works to just click on the "progress bar" at the bottom of the video, setting it back to the beginning. Then it reloads the bit of the stream it had a problem with and proceeds as normal.
I know exactly what you're talking about, because I get the same thing. A short time into the video, the picture freezes and I get a repeat of the last second or two, until it catches up and the rest plays normally.

I'm using Chrome, and the Adobe website tells me that Chrome automatically keeps flash player updated. I'll have to try it with some different browsers now.

Same thing has been happening to me as of late. And like Elinnea, I'm using Chrome.
Hey guys, I unninstalled Firefox, Flash Player and nvidia drivers and manually deleted all leftover Registry entries for these, then cleaned everything up with CCleaner, then reinstalled everything (newest versions ofc)...

...but nothing changed, and I feel like an idiot. My guess is that this is a problem with YouTube itself, hopefully they will deal with it soon because it is downright annoying. If anyone finds a viable solution, please let us all know. Cheers.

this may be it, I was having this same issue and it stopped after updating flash. of course, I didn't try it too much yet, the problem may still be there.

Have you tried switching to the HTML5 player? It's not yet supported for every video but at least for me it seems far more stable and reliable than the Flash player - less freezing, quicker skipping etc.. I use Firefox but the page says that Chrome is among the supported browsers so it may be worth a try.
Have you tried to disable hardware acceleration in Flash ?

Forgive my ignorance, but how do I do this?
