Gundato: It is just a matter of how you define "DRM". A lot of people don't feel the DLC-model used by ME2/DA:O to be DRM since it doesn't hinder your enjoyment of the base game at all. A lot of others consider it DRM since it involves activations and won't let you play your DLC-filled game without an active internet connection.

Can you understand why CD Projekt would want to side with the "it isn't DRM" angle? :p

I doubt anyone is going to really complain (DLC is nice), but for those who are strictly 100% no DRM whatsoever, make sure you do some research/wait to ensure that you will still count the game as 100% DRM-free.

I'm actually rather optimistic.
How's Witcher 2 a "good old game"?

Using the three criteria:

1. This is almost exactly the same thing as EA's "Project 11 bucks" or whatever it is where they give free DLC to new buyers.

2. The key thing here is "Internet-based registration of game copies is advisable only when the developer makes available, free of charge and via the Internet, additional game content or other services requiring an Internet connection".
So we have Vernon Roche's Jacket, which is free of charge. But it requires an internet authentication at some point, otherwise GameStop or whatever will get angry. And then, this puts the framework there for when we get mini-modules that correspond to the short stories in The Last Wish (HINT, GAKKING, HINT! :p. Seriously, do this CD Projekt :p).
Or, even simpler, an online page cataloging our achievements and decisions as Geralt (sort of like the one for DA:O)

3. Again, key thing is "charges can be applied only to completely new material providing additional gameplay time".
Need I say more?

Don't get me wrong, I am still optimistic and doubt we are going to be getting any DRM model that anybody in their right mind will actively protest against (although, I expect a lot of grumbling if it uses a per-boot authentication like ME2/DA:O). But, like I said, people who are militantly anti-DRM should make sure that they don't consider this model to count as DRM.

You're righ! Voice your protest here:

I hope physical disc copies will still be availible (is the GOG version a download?, probably but this will be something like 14GB or bigger) the disc version looking at CDP's comments about DRM in interviews will probab;y be nothing more than a CD Key and disc check (which even the most fanatical DRM haters will be fine with) and finally, erm, the name of the site is GOG.com not GNG.com (can I also assume The Witcher 1 to be released on GOG soon?)

StingingVelvet: Ever game is DRM free for pirates, I fail to see much of a difference.
avatar
scampywiak: The difference is paying customers don't get the shaft. It's not that hard to figure out, really. Or would you rather they go with Ubisoft's plan?
You must have had to try very hard to take my post so wrong. The point is YAY for CDP, they're not bothering with annoying DRM that does not work. BOO to the gaming media for acting like this is risky or insane, since EVERY game is DRM free anyway on thepiratebay.
Hurm. Will there be a physical CE? As cool as this offer is I'd really rather have a big box with shinies in it if possible.

Catshade: Just curious...how much do you think is the fair price for those digital bits?

KingofGnG: 20 Euros/Dollars. Ask me more and you're asking in vain....
Guess you'll just have to wait awhile for the The witcher 2 to come down in price.

I do think your unreasonable though!

amano: I personally don't like PC new game because you have to upgrade your computer (CPU,RAM,Video Card) for those game. I just think it is too much for me that on top of the game price I still have to pay for those hardware upgrade. What's worse is almost each new game require more and more, it's a never ending story. That's why I prefer buying new console game not PC game, and why I like this site for offering old game. Well, I think GOG doesn't need to offer *very old* game, games that are two or even one year old is fair to me. But to tell the truth, I don't like the idea of *new* game offering here. It looks like to me that GOG is distracting their philosophy. However, if it is business terms and deal with the game company for those company to offer games to GOG then I will feel more comfortable.
You prefer CONSOLE versions of games with their clunky simplistic gameplay and controls and dumbed down low resolution graphics over high resolution games with more complex and intuitive gameplay? No....really? Eventually everyone has to upgrade...that's how it is....just do as others said and upgrade evry few years with budget hardware.

20 dollars/euros for a AAA title with a shit ton of extras including: Free digital artbook(100+ pages), free bonus gog tile from a list of 5, 16 dollars in extra store credit for european customers, printable papercraft figures, manual, etc etc?

Are you insane? Or just cheap and/or a troll here?

Gundato: Oh yeah, one thing (that may have already been mentioned): I am pretty sure even the GoG release is going to have DRM of some form (even beyond GoG being arguably DRM).

There are DLCs that you can get from certain retailers (here is hoping buying from GoG lets me shove Geralt into one of Triss's dresses :p). Think for a moment: How is that going to be enforced/distributed? And the semi-open world nature of the game further suggests room for Premium DLC (YAY!!!!!!).

So yeah, don't be surprised if we get something akin to ME2/DA:O in terms of DRM.
They said no drm in the digital gog version so there won't be any drm.......trust them. :eyebrows:

Glad to be of service. Also, don't mourn - RPGs aren't dead, they just smell funny.

It is all a matter of marketing. As long as they SAY it is "DRM Free", and enough people agree, it is. Same reason why nobody minds having to authenticate with GoG's servers to be given access to the installers. GoG spins it as DRM-Free (and, compared to most alternatives, it is), and users accept it, so feel it can't be "the evil DRM beast".

Ironically, something similar happened to Ubi-DRM. Ubi tried to spin it as not being DRM, but it was too restrictive, so people wouldn't accept that.

But, like I said, I can't really think of any way to handle DLC without DRM of some form (unless everything is free and unrestricted, and the retailer-specific packs suggest otherwise).
