Lorfean: There are always complaints about any game that gets released, no matter how good it is -- it's simply impossible to please everyone, and some people just complain for the sake of complaining.
May be true, but then I didn't see similar detracting complaints about many other cult classic games, like the aforementioned Descent (+Freespace), UUW etc.

But ok, it is noted that according to you I am just imaging that there were lots of complaints early on about those titles. Maybe I was just dreaming that lots of people in Usenet didn't like the BG realtime combat system at all.

Magazine reviews are always magazine reviews, of course. They hardly ever make any harsh comments, have to think about advertisers.

asb: It's fair too early to call it anything like a classic. However, there does seem to be a sizeable number of people who claim that Alpha Protocol has much more to offer than the reviews it got at launch might suggest.
I feel like the reviews nailed it. They all acknowledged that what it did for conversations in-game was groundbreaking and exciting, but the combat was shit.

I never said that -- I'm sure you saw a lot of negative comments about these games, how else would you have come to the conclusion that they were poorly received? I'm just saying that the complaints you read weren't a good representation of how the majority of gamers received these games. And others in this thread are saying the same...

Maybe it's because some of the game publishers have got this policy which says if you dare to dislike their game... well... accidents happen... ;)

With Freespace 2 actually it was a critic darling (though not completely without detractors) and the gamers who played it gave it great reviews as well, but the trouble was that there were very few gamers who played it. Interplay never really advertised it and especially in the days of retail distribution, that meant the game was DOA. Also, the age of space/flight sim preeminence was starting to come to a close in '99. I think Freespace 2 sold only 25,000 copies in its retail run.

So one could say that it was poorly received in terms of sales, but it was well received critically and with those who played.

Yeah I owned a copy when it came out it took me 5 retail stores to find one that actually stocked it -.-
