Arianus: I can honestly say I'd rather Microsoft and Sony NOT release a new console but at the moment with Nintendo gearing up for something new it might push them to release something even if its just a hint at what is to come. Like i said in the opening though I'd rather not spend 600 now just to find out 12 months down the road a new console is out from Microsoft.
Supposedly MS has already given early dev consoles to EA and possibly others (though they deny it), but I wouldn't expect anything too earth-shattering from either MS or Sony on the console side of things. Whatever Nintendo has to offer will not really be "next gen" but just catching up to this gen since the Wii, for all intents and purposes is last gen technology (i.e. equivalent to the PS2 or original Xbox). That won't push either Sony or MS to go ahead with the inevitable new console war just yet. Besides, at least in the case of Sony, the current gen consoles are supposed to have a 10 year life span (not actual life span, but time as a viable platform) and we are only about 5 years in right now. If you are considering a PS3, now would be the time to get one (well, after this month when they get PSN back up); you already have a huge library of games out in the new, used and classic re-issue markets, there are still at least 5 years worth of games to come and if what happened in the past with the prior Playstation models is any indication, the best games for the platform haven't even arrived yet.

BTW - Where are you spending $600 on a PS3? I got my 320GB Move bundle (console, Move controller and camera, regular PS3 controller, one game) for $350 at Best Buy less than a month ago. I can't imagine anywhere else is selling them for much more than that.

Straight out denial means they don't have it, edging around answering would mean they are under an NDA and actually have one. The Hardware engineer spots were filled about june or july last year right now the next xbox is still just a bunch of chips on a breadboard

Arianus: So here's the shtick, in a couple months E3 is going to happen and Nintendo will release information on there new console and Microsoft will release information on a possible console. Now I know Sony is currently having trouble with there network (obviously) but my question is, Should I Wait tell after E3 to buy a Playstation 3? or not? Obviously I don't want to spend 600+ bucks on a new console only to have 12 months from now the new incarnation out. What do you guys think?
600+??? I'm trying to sell my brand new model for 200 with 5 games! And thats gotten me like one email.

The rumor said the "consoles" that were delivered were not in any way final hardware. They actually had the guts mounted in regular PC cases. If MS has been working on it for at leas a year now, I could certainly see them being at that kind of prototype level.

It's not 600 bucks anymore. However, this generation (excluding Nintendo, which really put out Gamecube v1.5) relies on their online stuff to be all they can be. Even if you dislike multiplayer gaming you will not really be getting your money's worth without PSN. If you must have a console now, buy a 360. If you can wait a bit, see if PSN is back up and doesn't get hosed over permanently (due to Sony's poor responses, they have a history of screwing their customers when bad stuff happens to them), then buy a PS3.

Even if there's going to be a new XBox or Playstation, who cares? There's still a good 2 years or more life in the current gen and they are priced accordingly.
Pricegrabber has listings for PS3s for as low as $221, only 120gb models but just put in a bigger hdd later if you need it and you probably won't. Grab one of those, a power a pro elite controller (unless you have the 8 year old girl hands the PS3 controller was made for), a copy of uncharted 1 & 2, heavy rain, red dead redemption and little big planet and you'll have a hell of a lot of entertainment for months to come.

Xbox is awesome too though, get whichever has the games you want, thats the true measure of a gaming system after all

I'm sorry, I know everyone's talking about the new consoles but all I'm seeing is "if this guy's still got this for sale mid -june, then MINE."
They were all good, just for different reasons. The director admitted didn't finish the book because he thought it was boring. Great political theory, though. That is an ip that deserves a good game.
PS3 and 360 are relatively new consoles by the way and will probably last much longer than PS2 or Xbox (both gave the impression they were made to clash with each other). I think that 4 full years will pass before Sony and Microsoft decide to release new consoles, they will try to milk their customer as much as they can, but even then, PS4 or the new Xbox won't be playable (countless patches, and good new games' arrival) until almost 2 years of their release.

I bought my PS3 last September, and I never looked back. I am totally content with it, it has great exclusive games, PSN helped me purchase and remember great games of the past (which I can play any time), and for me it's a no-brainer. I suggest you grab a PS3 if you really want, just not at that price, shit, 600 bucks is very expensive.

KavazovAngel: Wait at least a few weeks... If you haven't heard, the PSN is down because of hackers and stuff.
Yep, they (hackers) also affected most, if not all of SOE onlines games.

PhoenixWright: As cool as the PS3 is, if I was buying a console purely for the gaming experience I'd go with a 360. But the PS3 has Blu-ray. But the 360 has the better online service (even if you do have to pay for it) and most third-party games run/look better on it.
This is my pretty much how I feel. I own both consoles and despite it's overwhelming hardware crappiness (stupid microsoft and their cheap junk), the 360 does strike me as the superior gaming console simply because Sony went so OTT on their (now failed) anti-piracy that they made the PS3 difficult to code for.
Don't get me wrong, I love some of the first party games & exclusives the PS3 has but when you look at comparisons of cross platform titles there's a huge difference in game quality amongst some titles (Red Dead Redemption looks awful on the PS3 compared to the 360 for instance.) It's largely down to developers struggling to meet a deadline and having a hard time understanding the PS3, or just pure laziness. Is it worth getting a PS3? If you really want one then sure, it's a better media centre system than the noisy 360 but it suffers gaming wise apart from some really awesome exclusives (Metal Gear Solid 4 ^_^)

As for the whole devkit thing with it being in a pc case... Microsoft did the same thing with both the original Xbox and the 360 :P. It's inevitable really that games consoles now will be low spec pcs because the components can be bought cheap and a console doesn't need the weight of a high powered gaming pc because it's much more singular in it's task. Also with the xbox's running off a custom form of DirectX it's really easy to write the game (and do a quick pc port ¬_¬) Funnily enough the thing I keep reading about that's holding the current console generation back isn't processing power or graphical power, it's actually memory.

GameRager: HEY....I liked it. :(

lukipela: oh, it was good soft porn.

But the only thing it had in common with the book was the names of the characters.
Personally I loved both. Of course, Heinlein's book wins by a wide margin - but the thing I really respect the movie for is the fact that it recognised the tongue in cheekness of the book and adapted it to suit the MODERN AUDIENCE, which IMHO made it a stellar movie. It is MEANT to be b-grade and it does it with panache.

Can you imagine what a disaster it would have been if they had taken the movie seriously and tried "hard"? Shit, it would have been an abomination.

6months is the time it takes to do a base layer spin on a chip, for them to have a prototype now they would have to have taped out in about december which means they did a full layout in less than 6 months. To put his in context the Radeon 6900 series started design work ~8 months before the 5800 series hit.

At most right now you have a box with a Radeon card (amd basicly has console graphics sown up Nvidia refuses to liscence the hardware you have to buy the chips off them which ups the price, Sony were desperate the RSX is a tarted up 7800 still charged at full price per chip!) and a processor of a similar type (the OS programming set for the 360 was a PPC Mac with an X600 i think it was)

Oh for those who want to know whats in an Xbox it's a tri-core Power5 derivative with some custom hardware in the chip, mated to a custom ATI graphics engine along with 10MB of Edram with more custom hardware making it capable of handling 4x AA on it's own allowing the graphics card to focus on putting pixels on screen. In the 360S the processor and graphics are on a single die and it actually runs faster than the old chip they've had to add a hardware limiter to keep it fully compatable with the original chips.
