Magmarock: That's very ironic, but did you know they are re-releasing FF7 on PC? I'm looking forward to it :P
avatar
SimonG: Did you know that the game has been re-released quite some time ago.

And I played it on the PC, no emulation, in '98.

Yeah it was, and it's first PC release wasn't very good. It was buggy and had a lot of weird issues. I'm hopping the new re-release will not only fix that but also have mouse support. FF7 feels like it needed a mouse to me.

BTW just to be 100% sure when I said ironic, I meant as in it's usually PC games that are considered to be more complected but you had a good point hence the irony.

Fenixp: The vid reminded me of one thing, tho: What's about the obsession of some people to run videogames at 60 FPS? 30's fine and smooth, 40 feels kinda better, but anything above 45 or so is pretty much unrecognisable by naked eye. So... What's the big deal?
I'm one of those that prefer 60FPS and I can definitely see the difference between 50 and 60. 60 and 100 even. After 120 it's hard to spot but 60FPS is a good balance.

Here's a good site if you want to know a more technical side of it: http://www.100fps.com/

There's two distinct differences: individual requirement and the engine of the game. For example, I prefer 60FPS but I've no issues playing Heroes III at 10FPS because I'm used to it and it's turn-based. Anything remotely real-time I prefer 60FPS or as close to it.

If you want to test yourself there's a few pages out there like this: http://boallen.com/fps-compare.html or this: http://frames-per-second.appspot.com/

Try it and see for yourself. I guarantee you'll be surprised. :)

fortune_p_dawg: Hell, I run The Witcher 2 at 20-25 FPS on my laptop and I've not only played it all the way through, but I've enjoyed it immensely.
I had 40 to 60, 60FPS most of the time fortunately. I cringe at the thought of playing at that low myself but good for you able to enjoy it. You should also check that site with ball.

i dont own any of the current gen consoles and have no plans on buying them. I stopped at PS2. I only buy PC games now because they are so much CHEAPER when on sale. Furthermore, my PC lets me play pretty much every game ever released on PC or any console up to PS2 which is a huge advantage over any console.

Elmofongo: Coming from a guy who mostly grew up with console gaming:

I am starting to understand why PC gamers are so elitist because well how can you deny all of the great games and modding of the last generations

Deus Ex
Fallout
Thief
Morrowind
Half-Life
Starcraft
System Shock 2
Alone in the Dark (PC Gaming founded survival horror)
Wolfenstien 3D/Doom
Unreal
Battlefield
Everquest
Ultima
The Sims
Grim Fandango
etc.

All those great games with so much variety and I look at PC gaming now and it has few dedicated ones like Valve and Blizzard and CDprojeckt and Bohemia. (the first 2 of which are on gamers shit list)
I grew up as mostly a console gamer too, then when I got my PC I started getting PC versions of the games I had on console. One game in particular you should look at in the first Unreal Tournament. Take a good hard look at the PC version then at the PS2 version. I use an emulator to compere the two to my friends. Words cannot describe the difference.

Well when it comes to playing by myself I'm happy just as long as it's above 30 but if it's multi player then yeah need that 60 since a lower frame-rate can make for some tiresome excuses mainly from me XD

I was never much of a console gamer, but recent controllers such as the Wiimote and the Kinect attract me to consoles, because they provide a different mode of interaction that can be more exciting.

Neobr10: Because it's a stupid discussion that 10 years old fanboys use to inflate their e-penis. Seriously, it's just stupid. Consoles and PCs are different and will always be. Their purposes are totally different. Consoles are made to run games, PCs are not, playing games is just another function.

This is one of the topics that annoys me the most. The same BETTAR GRAFIX, DX11, MOUSE KEYBOARD RULEZ arguments again and again do get annoying.

Looking at the suggested videos almost made me puke on my screen. "7 reasons why PC gaming is better", "PC gaming sucks", oh man, the world is full of idiots.
Of course they are different...that is the whole point in comparing. Should no one ever compare them? Then what? If I want to decide between getting a next gen console or upgrading/getting a new PC I just flip a coin? After all, if I try to compare PCs and consoles in order to make an informed decision I am just trolling and an elitist all over some stupid discussion.

But that's not true.
http://boallen.com/fps-compare.html
http://frames-per-second.appspot.com/
The difference is clearer with the second link.

Anyway, even ignoring that, it makes sense to try for higher FPS as it typically isn't consistent. Would you rather be running at 30 FPS max, dropping down to 20 occasionally, or at 60 FPS dropping down to 50 occasionally?

SimonG: I prefer consoles for all the complex stuff you can do. What the Dreamcast has to offer with modding is great. Also, it has more complex games. Those JRPGs really offer some number crunching. What I like with PC gaming is the simplicity. Just clicking install and it runs. Nothing to bother with. Also, there are a lot of jump 'n' runs due to the indie surge.

Huh.FF7 is already out in digital format.
Just head over to SE
http://na.square-enix.com/finalfantasyvii/go/article/view/blog/259589/final_fantasy_vii_pc_now_available! for north america and https://store.eu.square-enix.com/emea_europe/pc-windows-download/FINAL-FANTASY-VII.php for Europe.

Edit : Seams i missed that you were from Australia
Hmm, wasnt FF7 PC digital Version released globally???!!
Unless you meant that they are going to release it yet another time.
I wonfder if my pc digital copy will be updated if they do.

I dont get the pc vs Console wars either
The arguments seams rather pointless to me.
I mean, you wont be rewarded in most cases if you stick true to a platform.
At least i never got anything, neither praise or rewards and i own basicly all platforms.

Yeah, sorry. I'm not making a decision on that. If I can switch a game into 60 FPS fine. But I sure as hell won't ignore a game because it doesn't run with 60. On the list of things I care about in a game, this isn't even on the first page.

I never said you should ignore games if you can't run them with 60 FPS. I play plenty of games that I don't get 60 FPS on.
Most movies released are operating on 25-27 FPS, and I may say, they run pretty smoothly :P
I'm planning to sell my deskop PC and getting the Wii-U next month, and since all of my GOG / Steam games are prettty, i can run them on my laptop :)
Guys, there definitely IS a difference between 30 and 60 FPS, and if you don't notice it, it is because you've gotten used to playing at lower FPSs. This comes from a guy that can play games no matter how they run.

The difference will be immense and evident if you start gaming at a stable 60 FPS for a few months and suddenly see a 10 FPS drop, believe me, it shows.

Anyway though, gaming is about having fun, not feeling superior to other people who play at 5 year old PCs or consoles, because they can't afford to get 2x690s at SLI and three 1080p monitors.

Interesting...

Recently I've developed the opinion that they are actually converging somewhat.

I've been playing at stable 60 FPS for years and don't see a difference at all when I start gaming at my wife's notebook @ 25-30 FPS. I just don't see it. I do, however, see a very minor difference on some of the animations other people posted, so I suppose even I somewhat understand it now.
