mshashankr: Am i the only one for whom its turning out to be a 'Battle of the games you've never heard of' ? :(
avatar
YogSo: Hadn't you heard before of Syberia, The Longest Journey, Farenheit/Indigo Prophecy, Alone In The Dark, Postal 2, Serious Sam: The Second Encounter, Gothic, Arx Fatalis, Sacred, Divine Divinity, Broken Sword, Jagged Alliance, Myst...? There's been plenty of popular games featured in the Battle of the Games so far.
Before i joined GOG? No.... After, well yes a couple. Bought myst... i'm actually whining more about how the contest has been boring for me.......

Oh. Well, I understand 'knowledge of games' may be a bit subjective, and it also depends on your tastes. I love adventure games and RPGs, so of course I've at least heard (if not outright played) all of the games pertaining to those genres that I've listed before. But I guess if you aren't very interested in them you may had never heard of the more 'obscure' ones like Sacred, Divine Divinity or Syberia...

gameon: What games would excite you enough to vote for?
RPG's.... Indie....some of the action, adventure. Problem being i only know of SOME of the REALLy FAMOUS old games.... doubt they will be featured...
I know its not GOG's fault if i'm not interested.... but.... can't help my mood :)

Well this is your chance to try some old obscure titles you may be interested in...why not give them a shot while they're on sale? :)

On the other hand, you can use the Battle of the Games as the perfect opportunity to learn about some great games that you don't know yet. :-)

I can't say much about today's games, because I've never played them. :-P But if you like RPGs, I can only say good things about the ones that have been featured so far. Arx Fatalis and the Gothic series are among my favourites, indeed. And Sacred is a nice Diablo-clone with an open-world setting. Septerra Core plays like a JRPG (think Final Fantasy), but it was developed by a western studio (and published by Monolith, if I'm not wrong, developers of well-known FPSs like Blood, No One Lives Forever and F.E.A.R.).

If you have the income why not buy one or two(No more so as not to make your backlog too much bigger, obviously.) from the battles that you are borderline sure if you'll like(As long as they're in your favorite genres as well, that is.) and give them a try? Who knows, you may end up liking them. :)

And don't feel bad about your backlog. I mention how big my own is in the Geneforge thread, and let's just say it's pretty big(Not huge, but still.).

I'd be taking a chance on these ;) Yes, i'm not much of a gamer... Anyways, enough of my complaining.... i wonder how many people have opened this thread expecting codes in the last half hour.. O_O

Stop whatever you are doing, get Thief: The Dark Project and start playing it right NAO! :-)

(I'd add Deus Ex as well, of course, but I've found it's a game much more sensitive to hype. That is, the more hyped one is about it, the more easily disappointment happens.)

Why not try the demos of some of them? Also word of mouth of fellow gamers can be a big help when choosing what to buy. Also BUY MOAR GAMES! :p

;D

And don't worry about the people coming in here....as I/others here said before, it's the chat in here that keeps this thread alive and keeps encouraging people to post game codes, so it's all good.

It's like BG2 but much less combat, and more dialog/questing/interacting. Great game, imo. Heck, the character interactions between party members + the story(And that kick-ass intro.) is worth it alone.

Oh, that's a good one. Make sure you play it at some point as well. You'll probably love it, but there's a little caveat: as you may have heard, it is *VERY* text-intensive. In a good gaming session you may do nothing else that talk to one of your NPCs companions and maybe some other characters you meet, but you'll still feel as if you've accomplished a lot of progress (completed quests and maybe even unlocked new skills through those dialogues). What I mean is, before you play it, be sure you are in the mood to read a very good interactive story. Not that there's not a lot of combat as well, and personally I think Torment has the most impressive-looking magic spells of the Infinity engine games, but it's not the main focus of the game.

Nice games you have there! I haven't played all of them, but I don't think you can go wrong with whatever you pick after completing The Witcher.
