So...is the use of scripts something that's recently become a problem (if it is one at all)? Because, aside from Steam keys which cannot be tracked, the times when a game I've gifted was claimed by someone suspicious are few and far between.

IronStar: IMO, using script to get free codes is not much different from piracy. Hell we are here to have some fun, and feel better after giving away some things, not to give it to bot user. I'm fine with new user getting the game as long as he plays it if he gets it and as he is fastest ninja around...
avatar
lugum: scripts prevents several people from getting a game they want to play. piracy wont stop anyone from that. ;)
That's another way to look at it.

With the running baby ? and the kitchen ?
avatar
GameRager: IMO if such things bother someone they should either ban the frowned upon method/action during said events(Probably not possible here),
Yes, agreed (on both accounts)

avatar
GameRager: stop "playing" with(Giving games in this manner...plaintext codes, etc) the other side
Yes, that's actually the method I have chosen, and the one that I'd encourage others to choose if they care about scripters (one remaining problem is that some gifters don't know about the possibility when they post their codes, and are disappointed afterwards).

avatar
GameRager: or allow everyone to use it while not complaining
A possibility, yes, but one that would significantly change the contest. In terms of Ninja giveaway, I doubt that people would want to change the "be the quickest" game into a "sit back and wait which robot gets lucky to catch the prize this time, while everyone not using scripts takes a lesson in futility" one.

avatar
GameRager: ......but don't complain about someone's actions/methods of doing something while not taking an action to ban or prevent them from doing so.
Well, what you perceive as "complaining" was actually an explanation of actions which were necessary to explore the problem, which piqued the curiosity of others. In general I agree though, "accept it or change it, but don't just bemoan things" is a very sensible maxim imho.

avatar
GameRager: Also what about my prior example? What if someone good at math/logic is playing chess in a tournament and blowing all the other players away...should they be banned or the game/event ended because they have a skill that gives them an extreme edge over the competition?
Depends. If his superior skill takes the fun out of the competition, and frustrates others because the never have a chance to win anything, then I might ask him to accept playing with a handicap.

There's some evidence pointing to scripts having become a problem, but so far, it seems that GOG codes have not been affected (although they probably could).

Doubt that will ever get a GOG release.

Seems it was one of the most expensive cartoons ever made and they had a sequel planned but got cancelled because the cost would reach over $100 million.

Hey Guys,

It's been quite some time since I've posted in this thread. It's really come a long way, nice to see. It's been like watching a fledgling whim evolve into a community in itself.

I'd point out about your concerns about 'lurkers' and people that run scripts. That In all of the codes I've posted (a lot), I've been able to identify the GOG user almost every time. I think the lurkers thing is a myth. On this thread however it may be more prevalent, simply because of its history, and it's easier therefore to attach to it. Even then however the profit from such a situation is unlikely. That's the beauty of the ninja giveaway, if someone wishes to profit they have to then sell it on before someone else can reclaim it. For steam keys, maybe not, but does anyone buy a steam account with a cheap game attached? Piracy seems simpler?

So my suggestion would be to chill. However to beat the scripts, I'd suggest that natural language is the ultimate script buster. Especially when you combine it with leetspeak. Any script that can rip a code out of that deserves the reward! Example:

That's why I asked. I gave both Steam and GamersGate gifts not too long ago with no problem. So either this is recent, or we're just dealing with people who wish to remain anonymous, whatever the reason.
