they tried it, but it wasn't a success...if i remember right it could light up their own ships ;-)

think the romans did manage quite well with waterborne ballistae though. thats one of the features ill be looking forwards to seeing on TW Rome 2 - the sea battles!
Never thought, that a ship build with ropes could real swim (yeah kon-tiki..but this were hugh ships...over 100 meters long) and capable to carry over 2k tons of stone....and thats nearly 3k years ago
