think the romans did manage quite well with waterborne ballistae though. thats one of the features ill be looking forwards to seeing on TW Rome 2 - the sea battles!
Yesterday i saw the battering ram in action. They rebuild a smaller version and tried it....
Never thought, that a ship build with ropes could real swim (yeah kon-tiki..but this were hugh ships...over 100 meters long) and capable to carry over 2k tons of stone....and thats nearly 3k years ago

Crazy how rapidly the space race and microchip advanced so much eh?!

We did a few similar "historical builds" at the archaological trust - though generally the departments that did that were more preservation based (timber replacemnt and stonemasonry - as well as replicas for the re-enactment units), there used to be an annual bruning of the boat at the viking festival but it hasnt been a frequent thing in the last ten years!
