Ultima 1-3 are run-of-the-mill "kill the big baddie" stories, not much to write home about. They were great during their time, but indeed havenÄ't aged well.

Ultima 4-7 are epic fantasy games mixed with philosophy, in a way that has never been tried before or after. The graphics have aged, and the NPC interaction has aged - the philosophy, and the way it permeates these games, hasn't. This is what made them classics, and what makes them outshine many newer games with much higher production values.

Ultima 8 and 9 were the attempt to attract a new audience by going away from the elements that made 4-6 stand out, and they were pretty much failures, though U8 can be seen as enjoyable in its own, not-quite-Ultima-esque, way.
