Wait... 8 is the Pagan one right? Oh my god, I could never play that game. Not after seeing the Spoony review. He says it was rushed beyond belief and it really shows. Just watch it yourself, here: http://spoonyexperiment.com/2012/01/31/ultima-8-pagan/
I might have to check the review of part 7 again though, can't really say I remember what the thought of that.

Ultima 4-7 are epic fantasy games mixed with philosophy, in a way that has never been tried before or after. The graphics have aged, and the NPC interaction has aged - the philosophy, and the way it permeates these games, hasn't. This is what made them classics, and what makes them outshine many newer games with much higher production values.
Ultima 8 and 9 were the attempt to attract a new audience by going away from the elements that made 4-6 stand out, and they were pretty much failures, though U8 can be seen as enjoyable in its own, not-quite-Ultima-esque, way.
