Oddworld just got Stranger...

We visit the epic world of Abe and Munch to meet a third protagonist of the [url=http://www.gog.com/en/catalogue/#all_genres/search/oddworld/]Oddworld universe. Meet the Stranger, a badass bounty hunter. This installment of the series brings us into the spaghetti western setting of Sekto Springs. The main goal of Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath is to gather enough moolah for a mysterious operation that the Stranger has to go through. To fulfill this you’ll hunt a plethora of villains and criminals which, like in any bounty business, are worth more alive than dead. The Stranger is on the trail of the ultimate bounty that would pay for all of his needs: the last of the Steef, a race of guardian creatures that are purportedly extinct...

As in every Oddworld series game, Stranger’s Wrath is oozing with the signature design of Oddworld Inhabitants polish and it is an unique blend of a first person shooter with a third person action adventure game. Either shoot your way with your trusty firearm or traverse the vast plains of Oddworld. Another example of the Oddworld flair for the bizarre lies in the game's weapons. Stranger, as a professional bounty hunter, has a two-barreled crossbow that uses “live” ammo ;) Live being living and lethal. Choose from 9 different critters to lock and load your weapon and unleash living hell on various Outlaws and criminals. This game features an extensive list of upgrades of Stranger’s equipment, such as the crossbow, the munitions, storage capacity and armor upgrades.

Don’t hold back, check out the Just Add Water remake of the classical Oddworld title from the original Xbox. It’s up for grabs DRM-free on GOG.com for $9.99!

jamyskis: @csmith: Honestly, if I were in ElGreco's shoes, with a comment like yours, I would have packed up my bags and headed off to Steam right away.
No one wins if someone takes offense so easliy.

avatar
jamyskis: Why should someone support GOG if they've never bought from it before and don't know what DRM really is?
It is not necessary to laud GOG with every posting about a new release. The site and community speak for itself without my input. I doubt that my one post would have such an impact on a potential buyer that I should feel overly cautious in my musings.

avatar
jamyskis: Also, the soundtrack is probably something that 1% of purchasers will listen to and never touch again. I burn them onto my GOG CD/DVDs with the game for posterity's sake, but to be honest I never listen to them.
Your preference and opinion only. If you can use your opinion in an argument, why am I unable to do so? Should I include a random stat that says "45% of GOG users probably actually listen to the soundtracks"? Statistics are nothing if they are undocumented.

avatar
jamyskis: Instead of insulting him with insinuations of idiocy, you would do well to explain to him in a much more civil tone just why DRM is a bad thing.
And this is where you took my post personal. You add layers of meaning to a simple post. A later post from me (which was before your lenghty post) mentioned that I did not intend to assault another GOG'er with the insinuations as you indicate.

And now, to be clear, I have nothing against you or your response. I have nothing against ELGRECO or his choice. I appreciate when people can be civil and discuss such things. I have many games on Steam (and many digital services) so there's no sense in getting into that here.

Shall we move on? The price has been much cheaper especially as part of the Oddboxx on other services. I imagine that means GOG will be able to put it on a weekend sale by the end of the year and make it a "no-brainer" buy for anyone that still doesn't own it.
Why does the release seem to refer to this as the JAW remake?
DO NOT buy it. It's horrible. Unplayable. Low-fps rates on good machines.

Horribly made console port, of not so fun game at all anyway...

Have you played it after it was patched? I heard that it improved even though it was not perfect.

Btw, the version is not indicated on the game webpage
Stranger's Wrath... no, thanks. A bugged port by a team who later admitted their incompetence. Gameplay-wise the whole live ammo thing went down the drain with ubiquitous ammo boxes and sucking the ammo out of corpses.
Awesome! But I'll wait for an Oddworld promo.
Other stores have the entire Oddbox for $14.99. So to compete, GOG should have included Munch's Odyssey in the price.

FraterPerdurabo: Don't put words into my mouth.

I simply said that some people here have an issue with DRM and this has been discussed to death in another thread.
I'm not one of them. I travel a lot and Steam lets me enjoy the occasional game when I feel like almost wherever I might be.
I prefer GoG's business model however, so I will always get a game on GoG rather than get it on Steam. Also, I don't care about achievements.

If you actually read what I wrote you'd see that they are simple retorts to certain things that he erroneously said and that they in no way put forth any personal opinion of mine.

ELGRECO: Well the $9.99 of GOG is EXACTLY THE SAME(the price) AS Steam and other online services and shops...THAT'S A FACT! doesn't sound much "erroneous" to me...

Well i prefer the achievements>soundtrack because the first EXPANDS the game's REPLAY VALUE and it makes it really rewarding when you earn an achievement for something difficult ;)
And I didn't call you out on the price, did I? ;)
I simply said two things:
1) You saying that the soundtrack is available on Youtube is equivalent to saying that the game is available of Piratebay. It's available, but illegally.
2) You might not find DRM a big deal but many people, especially here on GoG, do.

That's all.

Hmm... I dunno. I played it only with my friend on his PC day-one. It was horrible. Maybe after patches it's improved. My mistake then.
Will the GOG versions of Stranger's Wrath and Munch's Oddysee (when it inevitably gets added) get updated here as the new developers patch the games and when they eventually add the "high definition" content to Stranger's Wrath?

It wouldn't make sense to buy it here and miss out on future patches and content.
The framerates are much better than the original release. I would still recommend waiting until a sale or the HD remake release if you have an ATI / AMD card. The transparency effects are completely broken, resulting in distorted water, windows, etc. This applies to all vendors; Stuart (I think that was the name) of JAW has said both in the Steam forums and elsewhere that owners of this version will get the HD upgrade (when available).

CaptainGyro: does this game still run like poop on pc? I remember a lot of people complaining when it first came out

Gilou: Same question here

Windows XP/Vista/7, Core 2 Duo 1.8 GHz, 1 GB RAM, graphic card 256 MB (GeForce 6600 or better), 1.9 GB HDD
Waaooo, old games require lots of hz and mb nowadays
Are those the official system requirements? I have a dual-core 2.1GHz Vista machine with 2 GB RAM and some old graphic card (Vista says GEForce 6100 nForce 405 now but I'm pretty sure it was 7300 once, before I updated the drivers... ??? In any case I often have trouble with Shader requirements by modern games). I usually can play anythiong up to 2006/2007 and some newer games with less demandings system specs.

Do you think it might run smoothly on my system? If so, it goes on my wishlist but I'd hate to pay 9.99 for a game I can't play ...
I forgot it was even Tuesday. That... usually doesn't happen. :P

I already bought the OddBoxx from Direct2Drive months ago (and already had Oddysee/Exoddus from Steam, and Oddysee on PlayStation...), so I'm good on DRM free copies I'm afraid.

I have none of the Oddworld games on GOG, but might consider changing that in the future if the price is right (i.e. $5 or so for the whole set, since all I'd be getting is GOG's version of the installers, their extras, supporting GOG and Oddworld Inhabitants once again, and... I guess bragging rights or something). As it is, I've had no troubles since the patches, and I think they handled things fairly quickly and pretty well, and I'm very happy they ported the games to PC in the first place.

I was rather crushed when Munch's Oddysee was an Xbox exclusive back in the early days of the Xbox, and Stranger's Wrath near the end (...to add insult to injury, it's considered an underrated game when, in fact, I'd watched it's progress from the start and had even more Xbox envy along with so many Sega games, Phantom Dust, and plenty of others. I'd have bought it if I had the system, and now this gen I'm stuck waiting for Lords of Shadows, Harmony of Despair, MGS4, Disgaea 3, 3D Dot Heroes, Demon's Souls, and Little Big Planet, but frankly I've largely stopped caring about console gaming, and the wait is hardly killing me.) and it wasn't until years later that I was able to get an Xbox for $50.

This game is a (pretty rough) recent port of the xbox version, so the System requirement are official. It isn't optimized at all (Xbox = Celeron 733 + GeForce 4).

1)Never said soundtrack on youtube is equivalent to the illegal pirated version.I actually said you can find the soundtrack for free.THAT'S A FACT.If you think that is illegal then you can report to Youtube all the accounts and uploads of the soundtrack to either be banned or deleted. That is YOUR OPINION of what is illegal
2)DRM-Free is an advantage but when compared to only very few "STEAM-protected" games" eeehh....actually it's NOT A BIG DEAL..
3)I also said that the GOG price is the same as Steam and also that the Steam version has achievements which i explained on a previous post for what they are in a game. That doesn't sound "erroneous".Well i know you were referring to those 2(the ost and the DRM) but the "erroneous"(the way you said it)was very generic and it actually included the price ;)
