My first thought when I looked at the screenshots was "oh, it is that old". But after looking some more I think that the graphics look quite nice. Some later textured 3d games look more ugly. Untextured coloured shapes also has an advantage over low resolution textured shapes in that they make it clearer that what you are looking at is models representing things, not the things themselves if you are able to look at it that way.

But old simulation games have one problem. I think most people that want to play these games want an immersive experience. They want to pretend that they are actually flying an aircraft, driving a tank or trying to survive in a hostile world. One thing that makes these things very immersive is realism. Realism makes it more believable. The often high difficulty combined with the elation of being able to beat it doesn't make it less immersive either. Then there is graphics. The more realistically the graphics portray the world in a simulation, the easier it is no believe in it.

This is where older simulation games have a problem. For old strategy games the simple graphics can actually make the games better since the graphics that are there are just representations of things which you can build upon with your imagination or just see them as the abstractions they are. But for simulations, immersion is much more important. Not that immersion can't be important in strategy games.

It's Bohemia Interactive's game. They have their own store, buy the game there so they can maximize the profit. It doesn't need Steam if i'm not mistaken, it use Securom.

While it's certainly not for me (I'm pretty horrible even at games where you ride things with four wheels firmly on the ground (mostly), let alone where you also have to balance height), it's always nice to see GOG expanding its catalog with interesting new/old titles from interesting game genres.

While the concept of "good" might not really be entirely subjective( there are some objective criteria, some fairly universal success stories or abyssal failures ), I fully agre with the idea : for some, this game will be a welcome addition.

I would have prefered Gunship 2000 or Jane's Longbow , partly because Apache vs Havoc and DI's Apache share more than a name, partly because they actually were true gems ( for niche players like me )

Same with me :) Nice release, GOG, my father might be interested, he likes realistic simulators. But then, I can never say which one is realistic and which is not :)

The only game that have really made me wish that I had a better computer lately is "Arma 2", (it is not that new games look bad, it is just that old games look much more interesting) but now I can add "Take on Helicopters" to that list, and it is by the same developer!

Don't believe that civilian simulations aren't as good as war simulations. Even though war is fantastic ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hWCtfUgBtNw ) it can be as fun to do constructive things as destructive.

Can you remember Simcopter 3D? I had a lot of fun in that demo. Several years before the GTA3 games felt like I walked and flew in a "living" 3D city.
And the glorious feeling I got from "The Flight of the Valkyries" which was played whenever I entered my helicopter!

I know that the composition has some rather nasty connotations from the movies it has been used in like "The Birth of a Nation", "Apocalypse Now" and "Blues Brothers" and even though it feels very suitable for some of mans worst excesses, it is also a very beautiful description of the joy of flight.
