What started with NaNoWriMo in 2007 while DMing a Neverwinter Nights campaign (Legends of Leefe) is now finished. Having a few kids slowed its completion a bit. Hehe.

Lulu? I know about Kindle but the only Lulu that i knew are the singer and that Lou Reed newest stuff.

Yes. That's the lulu. I can make an e-book on Lulu. I think they sell to anyone with money. You can read it with Adobe e-Reader software. I can also make a PDF. I'm playing with the book thing I think I can have that done pretty quick.

You can read the first 5 chapters free right now on Kindle. If you really like it and want to read it, you can pick it up. If you like it and you really can't afford it, send me a PM and I can send a For-Review copy. It doesn't have the bells and whistles that the Kindle version does, but it's readable. To get that, you have to agree to write an honest review on Amazon when you're done.

There's several different variations on "free" all with certain benefits and drawbacks. FWIW I like Cory Doctorow's tactic, though since I've been too lazy to finish any of my stuff I've no idea if it would work for me, or even work in general.

I know a lot of established authors really do well with "free" because they then monetize a big back catalog of physical copies (which people seem perfectly willing to pay for) and they drive new book sales.

Still "free" when you're only selling a digital version basically means simply that, "free", you have to be fine with that or have plans to monetize a print version (perhaps signed by you) and go do book signings (assuming you can get any appearances).

I don't envy an author's lot these days I don't begrudge them charging for their book, whether I'm willing to buy it or not, it's fine.

I certainly understand wanting to share a story with the world. I'm afraid I can't do it for free. I'm really putting it up to demonstrate marketability of the book in hopes that it will assist me in gaining a contract. And, of course, to share my story. But if I put it up for free, I can't show that it's good for anything.

If I can get a good contract, I might be able to devote more time to writing and transition into a writing career. That's a hope and dream, anyway.

So far, my novella Memoirs from Special Education has shown to be fairly marketable. I might start finding something for that book sometime soon. It's hovering around the top 20%ish of Kindle books. Not super-fantastic, but not bad for word-of-mouth.

Yes, it's region free. I'll pick it up soon during the holiday season. Hope i got extra cash at that time. I really love to support good independent artist / writer / company. Because i know it's hard to make living today. I don't know how much profit you can make with each copy sold in e-book business, but what i know from music industry... it's really small scale.

Now tell me, would you really walk into a craft fair, point to random things, and demand of the vendor "Why isn't it free?" I can only conclude that your assumption is that this book is in some way inferior to books you purchase in stores or on Kindle, which is insulting to the author.
