rice_pudding: Really liking this thread. Interesting to see what everyone thinks of 'the classics'! I can think of a few, some already mentioned, and I know someone will disagree! lol

Half Life; sure it's a challenging old school shooter, but really I found it quite average and increasingly lost interest as I went along. I'm thinking of giving it another go at some point, since I loved HL2

Fallout; It's a great, concise little rpg by all means. I think my main agro comes from the fanboys. Most of the points they raise when bashing FO3 in comparison to the original (grey morality, open storyline etc) are kind of non-apparent. I consider it a surprisingly linear game (quite short too) with fairly black and white morals. It's still a good game, just not what the fan boys will have you believe. (to be fair most talk of non-linear gameplay is just hot air imo). FO2 is a nice improvement overall, but don't get me started with New Vegas!

Gears of War; I really couldn't understand the love this game got, cover mechanics seemed slightly broken to me, terrible attempt at telling a story, some really poor design sprung from a lack of imagination, it all generally cheapened gameplay. Coincidentally I really enjoyed the follow up :P

Halo Series Probably over hyped as a result of the console wars. Good for it's era, but timeless...?

CoD4; Seemed like a big step back from the previous games. One of those games that only ever felt challenging because of poor mechanics or simply unfair game design.

The Witcher; Unfortunately I am serious :( I love the game play, I adore the setting, I want to love the game. But the narrative, pacing and script leave major misgivings, and make me want to punch through my screen and into the devs living room. Other times I just laugh at how poor it is. Also "a mature, adult game"; get real. I completed the game recently and have the Witcher 2 downloaded, I just hope between the two games story and dialogue has improved, because damn there is potential there!

Star Craft Yes it's very well balanced, yes it's a sport in Korea, but there are better RTS's out there.

WoW just no

But hey, just my opinions!

Rob
Half-Life: I am the opposite I like Half-Life one better then 2

Fallout: I have not comment

Gears of War: the game got famous because of the graphics I remember that being the reason, but I love Gears 3's Horde mode

Halo: it is because it is the first Console FPS that worked perfectly Goldeneye and Turok was not enough

Call of Duty 4: can you explain more please?

The Witcher: have not played the witcher so I would not know

Starcraft: Divided

WOW: I somewhat agree
Final Fantasy 7 and 8

'Nuff said.
Metal Gear Solid series and Shadow of the Colossus.

hey Elmofongo, It's been a long time since I played Modern Warfare, but I'll try to illustrate some more specific points.

One thing that I distinctly remember bugging me was the grenade warning icon. After two runs through the campaign I still couldn't get my head around it. In CoD3 if the grenade icon went up it meant you were in trouble, it also meant the grenade was close enough to quickly throw back. In modern warfare it just doesn't seem to work. Grenades could be the other side of a wall posing no threat and the icon would flash up. Furthermore it seemed to give no appreciation for where the grenade was, dangerously close, harmlessly far. The graphics didn't seem to help with tracking grenades either. All in all, I spent much of the game wondering weather a grenade would kill me instantly or do nothing. Given the borderline crazy number of grenades the enemies seemed to use this became very annoying. Throwing back grenades never seemed to work like the previous game as the detection/throw command never came up properly.

The AI was mediocre, and making the game difficult seemed to involve throwing endless (are they endless?) hordes of goons towards you. Level design didn't help as you could often get surrounded, or face suppressing fire so bad, that popping your head out to fire a couple of shots would mean instant death. Sometimes you could fall back to a better position but finding cover would usually result in grenades coming in by the dozen or gormless AI rushing you anyway. Now I'm not amazing at FPS's, but I do relish a challenge and I've played my share of the classics (unreal, doom, duke, HL etc.). But frankly, winning several battles felt more like luck than skill, and sometimes like fighting back the tide with a bucket. Just...silly

The special forces sections were often just a bit meh. Like an early level where you turn off the lights and go in with night vision. Sure it's kind of cool, but shooting enemies who can't see you is hardly a game.

Finally, I shouldn't be able to complete a game in a day! Worth pointing out, I bought it second hand and never played the multi-player

PS. I kinda get what you mean about Halo, don't agree, but sort of get you :)

roninnogitsune: Mine is Neverwinter Nights 2 and especially the expansion Mask of the Betrayer.
I can't even play Mask of the Betrayer. NWN 2 was buggy & frustrating, to an almost unplayable degree. Mask of the Betrayer was unplayable. Constant rubberbanding, memory leaks everywhere and AI companions that did what they wanted, even with AI turned off.
But at least the camera did not get stuck in the ceiling, like in NWN 2...
Ultima 4. Just look behind the hype. Now that the graphics are no selling point any more there's no reason to recommend it to anyone unless to show that even bad games could be very successful in the good old times.
Horrible combat and lousy game balance mixed with a "little avatar be nice and do what mommy wants instead of roleplaying else you can't finish the game" story.

Hell yes! I thought it was a good game, but nothing like what all the hype was about, and too linear to really be taken seriously. And despite being an apocalyptic adventure, many points just seemed too cheesy or downright silly.

I understand the single player campaign part of the but how about the multiplayer part
Skyrim. I just found it very dull.

THIS, THIS, THIS, THIS 1000x THIS!!!

THE REASON THAT GAME IS SO POPULAR IS BECAUSE OF THAT FUCKING TRAILER

I personally found Half-Life too repetitive. Once the game had effectively blown its wad with the special forces flying in to eliminate anyone who had been exposed, there wasn't really that much more in the game to see. The scenery was pretty much the same for the rest of the game, the enemies were pretty much the same. The story was boring as well all the way through, and the one time it decides to try and pick up a bit, it just goes completely overboard silly.

Thankfully HL2 remedied a lot of these problems.

I love Skyrim, but above all, I respect everybody's opinions, so no harm done :D

Most over-rated game of all time? I still can't understand why the love for Minecraft... It has to be one of the most succesful & boring games of all time, at the same time :P

It was just too cheesy. If they slowed things down, hired a decent writer and threw in a few more textures, then we'd have an action game. Look at Blood, Doom or Catacomb Abyss, no problem creating an atmosphere. HL felt too sterile and clean to be real, and the silly cameos by the 'Man in the Grey Suit' were just silly. No doubt it laid down some groundwork for today's shooters, but as a game it feels like a prototype.

There are 2 places where you can see this, other than that, well not really

1) TV station offices. That was just...ridiculous! Poking my head to shoot resulted in getting it ripped off. Falling back resulted in being stoned to death by grenades. Retarded AI of my allies didn't help it either.

2) Prypyat, while waiting for extraction. Now what the <censored> is that about? Barely managed to survive on one of lower difficulties.

Well, at least it wasn't too dumbed down, like latter ones, and had some kind of non-retarded storyline.
The most overrated game?

Deus Ex

:taking cover: ^^

MASSIVE SPOILER ALERT ! Don't read on if you haven't finished this game yet.

But I really mean it though, yes it is the first fps with rpg elements, but in the end I only found that this didn't really work well. Also when I played the game when it came out, it had huge system requirements and my pc couldn't handle it, while the graphics weren't that spectacular even then. Then were there the conspiracy theories that didn't appeal to me very much, especially in the endgame where you have to side with one party, from one which is really really bad for the peoples of the world, and two others which are slightly less bad, but bad none the less. Needless to say I went for the really really bad option ^^, but that actually didn't make sense as you spend the entire game fighting these guys.
I don't find Deus Ex a really bad game, it has a good atmophere for instance, it's just a bit overrated imo.
