evilguy12: I meant that I couldn't image Final Fantasy VII being one of the best as it isn't on the same tier as Tactics (which I would so recommend, I'm not a big Final Fantasy fan at all but that's one of my favourite games). It was more directed at GameRager really.
I see, the quoting got me confused. ;)

I remember when 7 came out, everyone was crazy over it, and it wasn't much more than a loooong moooovie interrupted by "gameplay" which was either walking from a dot to a dot, static dialogue [click click click click click click..] and standard jRPG combat system. That's why it's on my naughty list.;)
avatar
Damuna: JRPGs are linear as a genre. If you find a fault with this, don't play that genre. Criticising a game of a certain genre because it is of that genre is senseless.
Don't worry, i know it is, i'm focusing more on the actual gameplay. Just tried to point out all the things one does there.

avatar
Damuna: If you want to talk about movies masquerading as games, I suggest you criticise the Devil May Cry series.
Or Mass Effect, or CoDs, or... It's an international trend nowdays.;)

DMC looks like something i wouldn't even like today\, so i won't bother. See, i played FFVII back years ago when i was into J-stuff (I guess i broke, and i cannot appreciate those faces, hair, and absurdly big swords anymore), and even then i thought it was, well, not much of a game.
avatar
GameRager: Lol...it's SUPPOSED to look like that. That's party of it's charm.
Er, i know? I just said i wouldn't appreciate it anymore, hence it would just be a forced experience, which wouldn't be productive.

avatar
GameRager: Also I love games that are more cinematic sometimes like ME.......it makes the experience that much more amazing IMO.
I'd prefer if they made games as games, and movies as movies. Hence we could play them, then watch a movie about it. Otherwise, we're just sacrificing gameplay. I must point out, that what nailed ME to this list, was that the gameplay.. wasn't much. A bunch of a-to-b levels, and dialogue that didn't really do much. Perhaps ME would be a cool movie, but as a game, well, not really.
I'm from the old school, the best experience comes from the head, the more my mind adds to the game, the better.
Like Burger said, if i wanted to watch a movie, i'd go to the cinema. [may not be an exact quote].

[edit]
So i guess it's better to make a good movie, than a mediocre interactive movie.
I wish games would go back to relying on gameplay, than a fixed storyline.

Diablo 2

Incredibly lame game.

What i hate most is repetitiveness. and Diablo 2 is full of this.

Through act 1 you just keep doing the same thing over and over. then comes act 2
and again nothing changes. there is no difference whatsoever between act 1 and 2.
diablo 2 is no different in complexity to flash game. it is dressed up more nicely and there is illusion that the game somehow evolves... but no. Its first ten minutes of the game over and over again.
Hate that thing.

GameRager: FF7 is a bit overhyped yes, but one of the best of the series....which is saying something if you think about it.
That tells me to stay away from all others as FF7 is one of the worst games i had ever played. It was just meh with added stupidity of random encounters. I see a 2m long bridge. takes me 10 minutes just to cross it while fighting some boring monsters.

that combined into a horrible experience which really left me with disgust.

(the hatred towards this game comes from the fact that I really really wanted to like it. I really did my best to appreciate the game.)

Diablo 2 felt like terminal patient without the liberty of euthanasia, gasping, coughing, passing out...But..
Since it's a hack'n'slash, a descendant of dungeon crawling roguelikes, i'd say that's not really a bad thing [well, only the length of the thing]. The more irritating thing was the dull atmosphere of the thing. Diablo 1 had it, Diablo 2 didn't come close.
Mass Effect.
Final Fantasy 7
Halo series
World of Warcraft
Legend of Zelda series (Except Wind Waker, that one was pretty cool).
Starcraft 1 + 2
Diablo 1 + 2

Damuna: On the flipside, you could argue that Diablo 2 inspired the Flash games you're comparing it to.
no you cannot. as my comparision to flash games was in no relation to genre. Flash games are small and more often than not are based on you doing the same thing over and over again.

genre is irrelevant. what Diablo 2 inspired is irrelevant. D2 is just a "flash game". simple brainless Farmville game where first few hours are fun but then everything is the same.

Thank you, I am not alone. I sure played a lot of Diablo 2 (mostly with family), but it was not a great game.

EDIT: Except, as I've said before, for the cutscenes, they were really good as usual.

Damuna: Did you play the (non-DS) handheld games? Or Majora's Mask? Those are great, too. Ocarina of TIme is totally overrated, though. (And I'm tempting Orcishgamer's wrath by mentioning this again. :P)
I've played LoZ, Majoras Mask, OoT, A Link to the Past and Wind Waker. I briefly played Oracle of Seasons on my cousins Game Boy when it was released.

Yar, you and I can agree to disagree on this one. For me Majora's Mask was a travesty after playing Ocarina. I don't know what you see in it, but you obviously do, so fair enough.

I do need to get some of the Zelda handheld games and make my way through them, sadly many have never made my playlist.
Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines.
Starcraft.
Baldurs Gate 1 & 2.
Battlefield 2.
Supreme Commander.
Pong

GameRager: This has got to be a joke.....most of that list are some of the best games of all time on gog and elsewhere, in their respective genres.
Well, I can see someone not liking BG, but my question to them is whether they like any of the other D&D RPGs of that era and if so, why do they not like BG. I just assume he/she dislikes them all.

GameRager: What about 3D pong? And it's "balls in your face action" lolololol
I'd tell you the kind I'd go for but I don't want to offend the prudes around here;)
