captfitz: i really, really love you for saying this. titan quest is my favorite hack n slash of all time and i've played them all. torchlight gets stale fast
I'm married, sorry.

This ^^. I still enjoyed it, but this sums up my thoughts. And it's completely overrated.

liquidsnakehpks: i would i agree torchlight is overrated its almost a demo with repeated levels and cheap items but has good music and promises a better sequel soon
avatar
GameRager: They promised Torchlight would be better than a similar overrated game called fate, which they also made btw.
OMG... Fate... AHHHH!!! The game that blatantly came with spyware.

Yeah, and a crappy almost non existant plot. Just boy/girl and pet go fight x/y/z and fetch me misc item crap.
considering Diablo/TQ/Torchligt/Fate/Nox.... what did you guys think of Deathspank? I didn't like it but it I guess it can't be classified as overrated 'cuz there wasn't that much noise about it in the first place.

StingingVelvet: 4) Torchlight - Some people make an average clicky-clicky game and people act like it's the second coming of Christ. Why didn't Titan Quest get such love? I guess because it didn't run on a laptop and come out at $20. Cheap and easy don't mean good in my vocabulary.

I never bothered to re-incarnate (or retire or whatever) my guy. They got the loot thing down (sorta), but they just missed out on a lot of the fun. When I got my ultimate ability (Quake or whatever) it's all I used.

In TQ my Battle Mage used all kinds of skills, constantly. The game was good and I've never seen a game come out with an expac that absolutely addressed and fixed every complaint people had with the first one!

The rubberbanding the expac introduced pissed me off, I need to check if the community has a better solution to this yet. I'll probably fire this bad boy up one more time.

Disclaimer, I only played the Live demo, and I hadn't really heard much about it. But I found the demo deeply amusing. They had a lot of details, like zipping his fly after he teleports in the outhouse, chickens that fight back, and a lot of one liners that make snarky references in the dialog.

The combat is pretty much what I expected, it wasn't outstanding but I didn't find it tedious or anything. I think the demo gets you to level 4 or so.

Now, I can't say anything about the game's pacing or the combat at higher levels, but I always sensed the game was more about the humor than the hack 'n slash.

Crapballs, I was hoping to pick up Fate at some point, now I know that it sucks and has spyware:(

Shadow Complex couldn't even come up with an interesting demo, screw that game! I did like the visuals in Braid.

The spyware is optional and you can skip it during install, but the game even without it is still crap. Very generic quests, most of which are the same quest just with different words in some spots....like kill 10 red/blue jellies in dungeon 3/4 and get boots/shirt.

Forget it, I had a hard enough time putting up with the Runic fanboys over Torchlight. I will give Torchlight 2 a shot for one, single reason: mulitplayer. But if Fate is that bad (they rave about how great it is on the Runic forums) I'll pass.

Joppelarius: As a new member, I was wondering if you guys can think of any games that have been overrated in the press or by people in general. I, for one, can sum up a short list:
1) Half-Life: I was bored with it back then, and I still am when I start it up now. I mean, what does it have that System Shock or Quake didn't have? It looks pretty awful too, even with the new Source engine. I really don't get that many people call this one of the best games ever. To earn such a title it would have to be so good I couldn't stop playing it even 10 years later. The only games I know of that have this with me, are Diablo 2 Lod, STarcraft BW, Gothic 2 and the Baldur's Gate series.
2) Sacrifice and Citizen's Giant: Kabuto (or sth): two different genre games with sort of the same look, from the same gaming era. They were praised in the media but sold pretty poorly. I thought they were absolute crap, I agree with everyone who didn't buy them, and strongly disagree with the suspiciously high number of positive reviews on them.
3) platform games like Metroid, Cave Story, etc.
Some of these like the Mario or Sonic games were fun.. IN 1989! I reallyy don't see how a 2D side-scroller with frustrating gameplay elements can be fun in 2011.

Any comments or similar lists?

eyeball226: I'm sorry, I can't take this post seriously. You can't call a genre overrated, you just don't like the genre. Also, I would argue that Metroid and Mario games aren't even the same genre.

p.s. The game was called Giants: Citizen Kabuto, not "Citizen's Giant: Kabuto" and you can hardly call it overrated considering it didn't sell.
Well, I suppose the post could have been better. But mind that it was my first post (new member), and that it was more of a test, I never expected so much replies. I also would like to keep my first topic free of flaming, so please back off. Thank you.

Of course it wasn't :) but I felt it was going in that direction. I have enough experience on other forums to anticipate it.
