The Wing Commander games were indeed pretty good, but I personally enjoyed the spin-off's more than the main games. Privateer is my favourite, for its open-ended "Eliteness", but I also loved Strike Commander, for being the only modern flight-sim with an actual storyline that captivates and works.
Unfortunately, as others have already mentioned, Wing Commander is Origin, and Origin is (or was) Electronic Arts, and the chances of having them join GOG looks pretty slim. Well, here's hoping with the rest! After all, it does look like EA has been trying to re-invent themselves lately. How successful they have been at that, is open for debate, but I believe that if they joined GOG, they would certainly send the right kind of message, signalling a major improvement for their company. I have strong doubts this will actually happen, but a man can dream* . ;)
About the sizes of the games: I too doubt this would be a problem. High speed internet is pretty widespread by now, as is cheap HD-space. Besides, GOG does not seem to have had any problems with large games to date.
Edit:
* On the other hand, this "dream" could become a nightmare. I certainly wouldn't want EA to take over and make GOG another one of their brands! Not likely to happen either, I hope...
