michaelleung: Yeah, because when you pay tax you get absolutely nothing in return.
XmXFLUXmX: If my tax money is being wasted on free money programs, or other programs that create a dependency on the state rather than encourage enterprising people/ideas, then it is a waste.
"If a man does not choose to work, neither shall he eat." 2Thess 3:10.
Not everything should be provided in the name of profit by free enterprise. Healthcare, being one example. Education, being another. Roads and streetlights being another. The government isn't giving you free money, they are provided a social safety net for those in trouble (like the unemployed). But I see what you're saying. We should smother everyone over the age of 65 with a pillow - why are we incentivising longevity?
In Denmark, during the recession you could claim unemployment benefits for up to four years. Using your biblical logic, that would mean everyone who was fired or laid off would just mooch off the state for four years, right? Fuck no. The unemployment rate stayed around 7-8%, and it still is. Just because the government provides a way for you to fall back, it doesn't mean everyone will take advantage of it. (I'm using Denmark as an example because they have one of the best social welfare programmes I've heard of, but this works for any country that doesn't treat their people like worker bees)
Correction: Danish unemployment rate wasn't 7% in 2008, it was 3.3%.
