It's like buying all the food and then being unable to eat it all.
It's a waste of a kind, different than food, yes, because it don't spoil and nothing get lost or wasted, but the potential of the game, theexact essence and purpose of the game - to be played is not fulfilled by standing on a shelf.

When I traded my addiction to alcohol in for an addiction to games some people said I wasn't doing myself much better, trading one brain cell killer in for another.

Fair enough, but I know if I spend six hours playing Fallout and then get behind the wheel of a car I'm not a threat to society. It turn I never hit on a transvestite because I was playing too much Diablo. One step further, I never spent all night playing Commandos only to wake up the next morning in a dank jail cell covered in my own vomit with no clue as to how I or the vomit got there.

Pshaw to the naysayers! I say, become an a game addict; it may not be much of a life, but it looks much better on a job resume than "crack head". :D

That's exactly the point where we differ! For me the purpose of a game is not "to be played" but "to give me some pleasure". I admit, most of it comes from playing it but not only. As I wrote above, knowing that I'll have something to play (and from various genres) for a long, long time is a very pleasant thought just the way it is. So those game are already fulfilling their main purpose for me no matter if I play them or not. If I get to play and enjoy them that will mean they are serving their purpose even better. At the moment I'm playing a lot of games but most probably I won't have that much time pretty soon. But it doesn't bother me at all - I'll still get enough positive emotions from owning those games. Win-win situation, no place for negativity ;)

And right now I'm about to finish Gabriel Knight 2 and I was glued to that game since yesterday morning and man, I have tons of fun with it! :D

Better than crack-head, sure, but you'd be hard-pressed to find anything WORSE than crack-head. Also, easy for you to say, you don't need much of a resume, you're your own boss (I doubt you're going to fire yourself from running the B&B).

One of my high school teachers said that a typical person will replace a bad habit with some other habit. He said try to make sure the replacement habit is a good one. I too am a gamer who is also a collector. It started early when I won a 1000 gift certificate to egghead software store. From that day on I started buying more games that I could reasonably play.

The one big difference between now and then is that at least now I can have a huge virtual library and not fill up my garage with literally a ton of boxes.

Anyways people collect all kinds of things and don't look at their hobby as an addiction. Rich folks collect cars, some people collect stamps, butterflies, comics, or coins. We gamers are a fortunate few because not only can our hobby be relatively inexpensive (thank you GOG), but we can play with our toys and get this . . . not really damage the original product.

It's great to own up to being a collector, but I don't think it anything to be ashamed of. None of the other collector types are ashamed of their hobby.

Yeah, I wish I would be like you in this matter. But that freaking non-rational guilt...
