KOCollins: I'm cheap and I had been waiting a long time to play Stubbs the Zombie...Heard about it in GOG steam fourm being on sale...so I grabbed it for $2.50...It didn't work, for the first time ever I looked at steam forums (I don't use steam much) and found that numerous and I mean a lot of people are apparently having the same problem...I tried all the fixes they mentioned, none worked...Thus now I must dust myself off and realize I have been justly punished for the sin of buying from Steam and not GOG :(...I feel fully contrite. On the other hand, that game is obviously broken for a lot of customers and the wankers (pardon me) should take it off their site before they loose actually wealthy people's bussiness and not just mine.

Sorry about being a little off topic, but if you haven't yet, check the steam forums if other people had the same problem as you, you may find a solution on there...If not then like me and the other Steam-flagellators out there, welcome to the We-Hate-Steam-For-Life club! :)
Sorry to stay off topic, but there are fixes on the forum for NVIDIA and ATI Graphiccards Users. It is just a small little .dll file you have to put into your game folder and the game works (at least for me, using ATI)

Thanks for trying to help me out here...But, like I said, I tried everything said in the forums including this .dll file, and nothing worked..I have an ATI too..and to top it off I'm still using Windows XP 32 bit (and yes I got the right download version for the .dll file)...man I'm happy I got it on sale...Thanks again for trying to help me Ubivis :)

GhostQlyph: IIRC this is a well-known error (on the Gearbox forums at least) with certain varieties of AMD CPUs that the devs never fixed despite well over a thousand people being affected -- and those are just the ones who speak up.

Download driver updates for anything and everything, scour Google for solutions to "borderlands general protection fault" in case someone's found a solution in the past year, consider trying a cracked version just to see if maybe the pirates fixed it, reinstall just in case it requires it to notice all the fancy stuff you did to the place. Otherwise, see if you can find some specific lists of hardware this happens on and replace yours with something it WON'T happen on. That's about all I can offer.

predcon: Which varieties? I've got a Phenom II X4, and I'd like to upgrade to an X6 1100T.
It seems to be mostly particularly weak varieties of dual core AMD processors, but there have been exceptions.
What does it say about Valve's support if people go anywhere but to Valve to solve problems? Seriously, I've heard stories, but is the support that bad? Are there no refunds even if they can't get your game to work and can actually see you've never played it (Steam Client tracks playtime, right?)?
Did you verify the game cache? It could be missing files.

I am pretty sure this is a common Borderlands error though, as someone else said. A trip to the official forum and a google search would probably be your best bet.

It tracks playtime. Sadly, as long as the executable is running, it's being "played". The Source Engine's games (the engine being integrated into Steam) may be different here, I don't see playtime accumulating when I'm on the menu in Source games.

(That means that in the case of errors like the OP has, they probably have 1-3 minutes of playtime logged. Not even enough to get past the character selection in Borderlands, even if you're rushing... But I've never heard of a Steam refund.)

The only times I've ever heard of a steam refund are with preorders. You can pretty much always get those refunded if you contact support and asked nicely.

In this case, the most the OP is likely to be able to get is store credit. Which is ultimately pretty stupid considering that Steam is heavily DRMed and they could deactivate the game if they wanted to.

Already done all of those things. No luck, and the "solutions" some websites are posting hurt my head - hours of messing around and trying to find that mythical DLL file and shit...?

No thanks. I just want a patch or a SOLUTION not some iffy answer that may or may not work and thus may require ANOTHER complete download. I'm reluctant to download again - that'll mean I've wasted 36gig on this "not working" pos.

Admittedly, I have unlimited net now but that's not the point....
*bump*

Still no luck nor any love. Anyone?

Steam Support offered to refund my purchase of Kane and Lynch 2: Dog Days when it was found that it wouldn't play while the Steam client wasn't in Offline mode (I already knew it wouldn't, but the Support reps put me through hoops anyway). I'd tried turning the overlay off, and a bunch of other "generic" solutions. I even had to provide "proof" that I'd contacted Square-ENIX tech support. Finally, they were like "We give up, we'll refund your purchase if you want".

I declined since only the multiplayer functions were hampered by not being able to play in Online Mode, and not many play K&L2 online anymore.

The thing is, it's not something you can just fix easily, like dropping a single file in or something. It's a bug in the game that the developers flat-out refused to fix. A circuitous workaround is the BEST you can hope for, because the next step is buying a new CPU. Which probably means a new motherboard, which probably means a new computer. Which means holy DONGS is that a lot of fucking money.

Hmm, missed this thread the first time around. I can't solve the issue in the OP, and others have given pretty much the same advice I would. So, I'll answer some of the side questions I saw that I DO have answers for.

Antimateria: Edit: and is it possible with steam put those games in another place than program files-folder.. A bit new with those steam things myself. and they haven't been most cooperative.
Indeed you can. It is based entirely on where you initially installed Steam. I have Steam installed to G:\Games\Steam\, and all my Steam games are installed on that drive an within that directory. Saved games will still go to wherever your Users folder exists (in my case, U:\Users\), if that is where the game is programmed to put them.

If what you need is more storage room, then this can be accomplished by following the directions in this thread:
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=998110

If you want to change the install path of a game entirely, not just it's stored location (to get it out of C:\Program Files\, for instance), then you must re-install Steam at the new location; as far as I can find on the Web, all Steam games must exist within the Steam install directory tree. Here is a link to how to move the Steam install easily:

I have a Phenom X6 1090T, and Borderlands runs perfectly fine on my system. I think the only difference between the two chips is that the 1100T is rated 100MHz faster (3.3 GHz vs. 3.2 GHz). I am fairly sure they are the same chip, just the 1100T tests better (i.e. binned higher).

Your assessment of the 1100T would be correct. So I guess you're good to go, predcon.

That's crazy.

I have a i7 930 chip, HD5770 1gig and 8gig DDR3 1600mhz ram. My motherboard is a GTX-UD3R rev2 motherboard - which is pretty damn good. And Win 7 64bit.

I honestly doubt it is my system....?????
This is a bit of a long shot but many people, including me had problems with installing Borderlands due to antivirus software (avast in particular). I dunno maybe try to disable your antivirus.
