Hi,

Is there a way to get rid of the damn ugly new icons?
Every time i install new games, i get pissed after the second game.
I mean the tiny round ones, that all look the same on the desktop and you can't
tell anymore what's what on the first look. Even the steam client is better than this crap.
If there is some fix for this, please let me know.
Thanks

Yep. Assuming you use Windows, right click on the icon and select 'Properties'. The properties box will open, and in the 'shortcut' tab (it should open up on that) you'll see a few buttons at the bottom; you need to click the 'Change Icon...' button.

Just find or create an image that you want to use for the game, save it in a folder on your PC (maybe reduce the size in an image editor if it's too big) and then when you click that 'Change Icon...' button you just browse to wherever you saved that image and select it to set it as your new icon for your shortcut, then ok/ apply as needed.

Once upon a time I bought games on steam, I don't anymore, I have a shitload of games *locked* over there, I loathe steam for a lot of reasons ..... but you can't imply the "shortcuting system" of steam is genuinely bad (or 'yes you can but then I won't agree').

"Locked" in a DRM-y way. I mean : before installing them, I have to deal with steam. And I despise Steam as a software. And please people, don't start a 'offline steam is not drm' discussion with me, I spent enough life energy and mana on such topics. And that is definitely not the topic of this present one.

Oh I didn't mean it in any non drm way I was just wondering what you meant by locked I don't start things like that everyone has their own right for opinions if that is your opinion I acknowledge it

I knew you asked it genuinely out of curiosity :)

But there are people (even here) who have to stir discussion out of that subject on every possible occasion. I try to prevently ward them off.

Sidenote : sometimes I dare use uncommon phrasal verbs and I haven't the faintest idea if that mean something at all .... but as long as it sounds right and nobody tackle me on this, I'll keep on "weirding up" my sentences. Seriously people : do I speak/write frenchly strange some times ?

I actually like the round icons. :(

You can change them by going into Properties (right clicking the icons), clicking on the Shortcut tab, and click on the Change Icon button. There are plenty of icons you can look for on the internet.

Also...

Really? Unless they're too small to notice I can tell the difference between them (and they have the names of the game on the shortcuts to). And the steam thing...why bother with the shortcuts for Steam games? You're better off just logging into the client and playing the games from there.

Hmm. Never disturbed with that kind of problem. I usually launch the game directly from their directory, not from desktop.

But I think each game already has included their icons for desktop in their directory. You just need to follow the instruction in the first reply here, and use the icon in each respective game.

That's a shame you don't like them. I love them myself. They look especially nice on my Macintosh where they are larger and the detail comes out more. Even on the Windows desktop I think they look nice though. Unfortunately, all Windows icons are too small in my opinion but then I don't like the Windows UI much.

I would not say the Steam client is better consistently unless you happen to like the generic Steam icon they default to every time they or the supplier of the game is too lazy to produce a real and attractive looking icon specific to the game. These piss me off, it is clearly laziness and the default icon is ugly.

Anyway, right click any icon and change it to whatever you want.
@Potzato

But you bought the games knowing that STEAM would be required, and you still complain for knowing that's how it is?

Mystified in the Pacific ocean.....

To me.

The steam client evolved a lot in its existence. I mean A LOT.

Did I have the choice to get reimbursed of my games because they changed their client ? obviously no. I won't complain too much.

Did they ask me what I thought of their client ? no
Did they allow me to keep the old interface ? no
Can I deactivate all their 'advertising' features integrated in their shitty soft ? I can go f**k myself if I want.

But as I said before, I don't want to talk about steam here. So please don't make me.

You are aware that you can scale the Windows desktop icons to any size you want, right? Click on the desktop, hold down ctrl and use the mouse scroll wheel.

Yeah, a 256x256 px icon should be large enough to make out the details.

On the other hand, OS X icons can go up to 512x512 (funny, that's larger than the entire screen of the original Macintosh at 512x384). Or is it even 1024x1024 by now (with retina resolutions)?
