Excuse me for being so amazed, but the almost 70% discount which results in $47 for 8GB RAM is really great!

With that discount, I almost feel bad for not needing to buy RAM (neither now nor for the foreseeable future). ;)

I "only" have 4GB, but honestly there is no need for more than that.

~1700 MB in use, and not running any games. Add SC2 to run alt-tabbed always ready to start a match, and a VM or two at the same time, and my system starts crawling. :(

Yeah, if you don't run much 4 GB is ok, but with a 64 bit system and multiple things running I find 6GB is pretty good. Someday if things get more demanding I might go up to 8.

That's been the average sale on Newegg this Christmas season too. I just ordered 16GB of the same stuff (or very similar) off Newegg in fact. I think it cost 89 USD.

16....Gigabytes? Why?.....?

I mean I understand if you do video editing or run 3 screens but beyond that there's not much call for RAM beyond 8GB.

As soon as the rest of my parts get here I will:) Right now what I have is sitting in boxes until the last box arrives (and hopefully I haven't forgotten anything or I'm off to Frys!). I write software, though with my current toolset I still top out around 7GB of RAM used at work. Still, the more power I have to play with the more ridiculous things the tools are happy to use it for:)

And programming tools are almost always multithreaded!

Compiling an installer for FlatOut 2 with 1GB in a VM = 60-70 minutes. Compiling it in the host OS with 4GB (it even has web and database servers running and other stuff) = 20-25 minutes...

... it won't scale the same as with 8GB and 16GB, but still, it will be quite faster (probably as fast as the CPU can do the calculations).

Not interchangeable. If your motherboard takes DDR2, you're right where you should be.

When you next upgrade your motherboard, get one that takes DDR3.

Not to mention sometimes it's useful to be able to load that 3GB XML file into memory so you can use DOM instead of SAX. Yeah, it's not ideal, but with oodles of resources you can actually do it.

The thing i dislike is, if i change my motherboard, basically i'll need another CPU and RAM. Probably need to upgrade my PSU too. That's equal to buying new PC for me. That's why i have no plan to upgrade from my cheapest Core 2 Quad to new Intel processor. Beside, i don't think it's necessary yet.

Most PSUs can be used in new mobos if you keep the same family(AMD/INTEL/etc), and if you pick the right mobo you can have upgrade room and still use your old CPU. But yeah you'll def. have to get new RAM in most cases such as this.
