Hi all,

I was wondering the following. What is it exactly that GOG does with these older games? In what way are the modified?

Let's take Fallout for example.

Original system requirements : Pentium 90 Mhz, 16 MB Ram.

GOG system requirements : 1 Ghz, 256 MB Ram

The difference is pretty big. What exactly is changed to the games for such a huge difference to occur?

Thanks in advance!

A lot of the games here use some kind of emulation nglide, dosbox etc due to them not being compatible with modern operating systems and hardware, this accounts for the extra system requirements.

I see, thank you.

So it's probably not possible to play, for example, Fallout GOG version, on an older machine with the original system req specs?

The original game is usually provided as some kind of ISO or includes all the original files within the installed game folder so you could use it independent of any emulation if you wanted, I've never done it though(64bit) so maybe somebody else can give you more specifics about how to do this.

Fallout should be able to be played (if not at the original system requirements, then at least lower than what GOG specifies), yes, it is the original Windows version. The GOG installer, however, will only run on Windows 2000, XP, and newer. GOG DOS games come with DOSBox which increases the requirements a fair bit.

Games tend to need more resources. (EXAMPLE:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theme_Hospital)
Also there is the additions of emulators and stuff.

Awesome, thank you! :)
There's also the simple fact that XP requires a minumum of 128MB ram (vista/7 1GB) anyway so naturally the specs will be higher.
