amok: I remember one of the Norwegian paralympics a few years ago who after the Olympics took part in a sketch show. Later it was a bit of an media uproar and deemed in bad taste. When he was interviewed he was asked why he took part and he said "if you can not laugh about it, what is left then?"
I think most people feel a little differently about someone mocking themselves rather than being mocked by someone outside of their circumstances. In those circumstances, we're not talking about a terminal illness either.
Regardless, personally, I've never found the comedy stylings of Seth McFarlane and others like him very funny at all. I guess I'm a little out of the times. To me, mocking people who have Altzheimer's, cancer, or AIDS really *should* be off limits, at least when it comes to taste. Altzheimer's is particularly bad since they are people that truly cannot defend themselves.
