You did something! Site told me you did something! WHAT DID YOU DO? WHAT DID YOU DO!?

Mentalepsy: Jesus, enough already. I would venture to say that most of us who don't use Steam simply don't like it. If you do, then more power to you. I don't. I don't like Impulse, either, and I'm not on a crusade against either one. There are also those who have had bad experiences and don't want to go back, and that has happened to everyone with some shop or service at some point.
Steam has something in common with Linux and Firefox: if you are not using it, you are pissing someone off.
Likewise, if you are using it, you're pissing someone off. (Observe: this forum)
Seriously, the PC gaming forum-going community seems to be dividing into various factions over Steam. There's people who think Steam is the best thing since sliced bread, there's people who think Steam is the gaming equivalent to the Anti-Christ and there's people who think Steam will be the gaming equivalent to the Anti-Christ once Impulse is sent packing. It seems the number of people who doesn't fit into these catagories are in decline (like me. Personally, I like Steam, I like the client for game-organising purposes, but I wouldn't buy there when Retail is usually cheaper. But I do bite at the loony deals e.g. $0.98 Half Life, £1 Psyconauts, Christmas Sales, etc.).

Nothing important. I just wanted you to know that I have a similar story to Stuff's. I was about to give up on gaming but GOG saved me with drm free. Sure the old games part is cool but it's the DRM Free policy that keeps me here and it's what caused me to sign up even before the site was launched.

I would be from the camp that thinks Steam is the Anti-Christ my reasons?
No, not the fact of any software or overpriced downloads or anything to do with the services. In fact I like the idea my issue is with the DRM involved Yes DRM if a company wishes me to pay for a game and be forced to download it even if I buy it on disc is that not DRM? Why do I need steam to play my game? I merely want to put the disc in install and play without any access to the internet required. Am I one of the few remaining gamers without internet access? Yes. But Steams DRM like all other DRM's promotes not discourages piracy I have been forced to erm aquire Left 4 Dead and portal in a manner I would not choose had there been no DRM I just hope Beth join GOG so that in several years I can buy New Vegas without DRM.
I am officially gutted at this news, as I really liked F3 was was looking forward to FN3.
I'm not a steam hater myself I just don't like its limitations (Some imposed by Steam, some imposed by my particular circumstances.)
My main gripes with Steam are:
* Activations - I just thing they are plain wrong. Its not right to treat all your customers as criminals.
* Online to patch/install - My internet connection is crap and capped to 3GB per month and as such my gaming PC is not connected to the Internet (This saves it from having to have Firewalls, anti-spam etc installed) and personally I'm just not interested in multi player so I really don't miss it.
I was not a fan of GFWL in F3 but at least that let me install/play the game without ever going online and the DLC was eventually released in a offline friendly DVD.
If they are going to use Steam fine, but why can they not use other methods for different retail channels? Why limit your selvs to one type of distribution technology?
E.g. The DVD could be released with a version of the game that does not require Steam (I don't care about steam achievements anyway)
They could release one on the D2D platform for people that want an Internet download version without Steam.
Oh well its there loss in the end and my £30 will either be saved or spent on something where I'm not treated as a criminal.

lackoo1111: but none of the major publishers

Fuck 'em! all they ever put out is repetitive crap! I can't remember the last time a game from one of the big 3 (EA, Activision, and Ubi) actually appealed to me after reading the games features.
... besides, all three of them will soon be releasing their shit exclusively on "OnLeash", the latest and most obtrusive DRM yet!
I'll throw my hat into this discussion...
I have a constant internet connection that fast and stable. I have no overwhelming issue with steam (or impulse for that matter). That said, Steam (and Impulse) should remain an OPTION, not "the only source" when it comes to A+ (commercial) games. Steam would be a great platform for Indie games. I say would be due to the fact Steam is often so focused on A+ titles that the indie games they DO have are usually ignored (unless they've had heavy press, like Braid).
In the realm of digital distribution only GoG seems to have it right. Online purchse -> Online download -> Offline play w/o "activation". If I wasn't nearly broke, I would be sooo tempted to buy a GoG shirt right now!

My points exactly great post Bobscraphouse!
Oh just remember that d2d option you wanted for it to truly work it would need to be like GOG.Com ie: No DRM!

rogness: Bad news? This is great - Steam's ace. In the 6-odd years I've been using Steam, I have only ever had one problem (HL2's early crash problems) and I have never, NEVER, had a problem accessing my single player games in offline mode.
Have I been lucky? Maybe, but my friends have the same Steam experience so I doubt it's luck. The rest of you infernal whiners are either just massively unlucky or just being completely over-the-top preposterous. Or both.

DosFreak: Cool story bro

Just like everyone else's, really. Apart from yours - yours seems to be lacking something.
Nah, it's not fanboyism or butthurt (although it's still slightly tender) - rage definitely, rage is good for your soul though, as this topic blatantly shows.
And nobody's pissing anyone off by not using Steam - certainly not me anyway - but it's hard to see where so much hate comes from, especially when I've not had any trouble at all with it. I can't imagine not buying a game I've been really looking forward to just because it comes with Steam.

Its the internet - I like steam a lot, but earlier in the thread I posted a message with rational concerns from people about steam. Most of the responses did not impress from either the pro or anti steam camp.
I know. I know my words, your words, and their words will fall on deaf ears and count for nothing. In the grand scheme of things, what it does it matter who likes Steam (or bratwurst, or Domestos bleach, etc.) and who doesn't? It's there, people will use it.
It just feels good to voice your opinions and disagree with others sometimes, doesn't it? Ah, God bless the Internet!
Right, I'm off to play Outcast... through my Steam shortcut. Oooooh!

Just out of curiosity, does Steam overlay work fine with Outcast? I remember having some issues with it, not sure what kind of issues thou...
Also, OUTCAST IS AWESOME!
Yeah, had to say that.
Nope, you're correct on all counts: Steam overlay doesn't seem to work with Outcast, and Outcast is awesome.
I'd never noticed the overlay not working before (don't really use it that much). Darn it - it's an outrage, burn Steam! ;-)
