I'm looking into buying Evolva, and it looks like it's not really that bad. The only problems I can foresee are repetitive gameplay and samey visuals(as the reviews point out) so, anybody reading this who cares enough to reply, what do you think? Is Evolva another underrated classic, or does it rightfully deserve that 3.5 stars it has on it's store page right now? I had to ask here, since I think we both know Evolva's forum page is just about dead :P
More gimmick than game play; don't expect a deep RPG plot.

The game is an exercise in exploring the different RPG design conventions over the years, which is cool and all, but don't expect a deep story line to go with it.
I'd say it deserves its 3.5 stars, meaning that it's above average (assuming 2.5 is the average, although I know that's definitely not the case here on GOG), but less than phenomenal. It has some interesting and innovative mechanics, and I quite enjoyed it, but it's not one I keep going back to.
If a mediocre game is 2.5, then yes a 3.5 is correct. It is an OK game, not a great game that is enjoyable to play, and well worth it, but not a truly great game. There is nothing bad in there, it is just a little bit bland generally.
Yes.

I played it a long time ago. It was fun, but a bit repetitive. Also, it becomes quickly quite hard. I'd say if you are interested but not sure, then buy it when it is in a promo.

Uhm... can it be that you are referring to Evoland while OP was asking about Evolva?

Yeah, I knew Evolva had very light RPG elements, but the comparisons stop there XD

Anyway, thanks for the replies, I will maybe wait a bit to buy it in a promo as sebarnolds pointed out, but in my 313 days of using GOG, I don't think I've seen Evolva in any promo yet :O
Evolva never "clicked" for me. I got it way back (was free with a magazine subscription), and I just did not like it. Combat was a bit "meh", and the controls could have been better. I was also not overly keen on the way the game sounded, and the level design was a bit confusing (in a bad way).
That being said, I never spent more than an hour with the game, so it is entire possible that it gets a lot better late on. But my limited experience with the game tells me that the game was more "interesting" than actually good.

I do believe I am.
I liked the game and hat quite some fun with it back in the days. It was the first game I played on my new GeForce. I played it for a while, but never completed it. For a few bucks I'll probably give it another run these days.

Similar story here. I played it for 2 hours and it didn't make a great first impression at all.

I liked the premise of the game, but ultimately, it felt unintuitive and a bit unpolished. It didn't make me feel like it discovering further.

It felt "old" in a bad way.
