While the game will not work on my notebook nor on my desktop pc I really hope there will someday be a steamwork-free version, like Rebellion did it with the old Aliens vs Predator. But to be honest, first Civ5 and now the Duke steamworks-only makes me a little bit sad.

I prefer not to encourage such poor behavior. And pirating, whether or not you own a license for the copy, just encourages companies to put their faith in Steamworks in the first place.

The only way to gain any traction on the issue is to refuse to buy things at anything other than a steep discount to normal list price. Or better yet not buy anything at all from them.

Hey, im glad to find someone that shares that policy. Interesting that the steam portion will be ripped out in the "leaked" duke, and it'll be the same if not better than the steam one.

I personally, think that it's the only sane policy to have. I've been burnt in the past by DRM making it so that I couldn't use something that I paid for. These days, I don't buy unless I can resell and preferably have some assurance that the item will work permanently.

I know they've said that they'll provide patches to remove the DRM if they go under, but I don't trust that. Given that we can't see the contracts they're penning with other companies, I'm suspicious that they even have the right to do so.

I want to play the duke a long time.
I started gaming with atari , NES , SNES , SEGA , and then PC
wolfenstein 3d , Hexen , Doom , and then came the duke.
I loved it so much i still know the oneliners in correct order :)

So since steam hasn't failed me "a lot" up untill now i'm ready to buy the game and support the dev's who actually finished the game.
Hopefully a "sequel" won't take a decade then.
So i'll be praying steam doesn't f*ck it up.

Cool, I was expecting something like Ubisoft DRM. Never had an issue with Steam since its easy to rip the files for a backup so I will be getting this on sale I think.

1: I blame you when I can't find any DRM free new games. ;-P

2: It's cumulative, while one or two people isn't going to make a difference, you wouldn't have a million downloads if a million people weren't doing it. It adds up and the more people that take the moral relativistic approach to it the more justification the companies see in locking it up.

I can understand why publishers like it, and those folks who do multiplayer.

I just really hate that there's no choice. If it were just for the multiplayer, I'd happily pay a reduced amount for a single-player only version that was drm-free... not ever likely to happen though.

Given that I've started up steam recently for the GOG roleplaying group organisation, I'm not as hard-line as I used to be.

And piracy just encourages the company to DRM it.

Buying it on steam and playing a torrent game would be like playing that steam'ed game. I'd say at least buy it retail, that way Valve doesnt see a % of that sale.

I don't like Steam but I see the value in it. It is the best alternative to any other DRM out there. What other DRM service gives me a server side backup and community stuff?

If someone thinks the service degrades the value of the game due to no reselling (isn't this the same lot who says reselling is worse than piracy?) that is fine but just buy the bloody thing on sale for $5 in a year.

Because of Steamworks, yes. Won't prattle on as to 'why', because it gets real old, real fast for all involved.

My loss? Possibly. Although seeing as they're NOT getting my money, I'm never sure how that's supposed to work...

If I get desperate to play it (which, I hasten to add, has not happened for any game ever), I could, as you say, just pirate it.
