ReynardFox: Maybe it's because I've never enjoyed the controls of a rally type racer, but I played FO with a gamepad found the controls to be far, far too slippery and twitchy, with physics and environmental hazards that were unpredictable in a way that kept me from ever really feeling in total control. Also the computer AI basically cheats. I didn't enjoy it much past the first few courses at all.
I can't argue that FO2's soundtrack (with the exception of Rob Zombie's Demon Speeding) was anything other than a steaming pile of commercialized shit though.
You're right, FlatOut (and dirt racing in general) is not for everyone. It is slow and slippery. The game is not fair in singleplayer with the rubber banding AI and sometimes really unlucky dispersion of physics objects. The AI can crash out several times and still win, while you often can not because crashing has REAL consequences. Maybe I am a bit masochistic in enjoying my games beating me up and not giving me a fair chance, but I have fond memories of limping over the finish line with a busted suspension (yes, just driving hard and doing big jumps will wreck your suspension, these are NOT rally cars) or crashing out in specatular fashion and losing first place.
While I never enjoyed FlatOut 2 I enjoyed the Xbox 360 remake called FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage. It is almost identical to FlatOut 2 with some tweaked graphics and a soundtrack filled with non-mainstream bands. While not as heavy as the first game, it somehow felt more weighty than FlatOut 2.
