After the 'Interplay Summer Stacation', we're pretty sure many of you re-discovered the awesome Descent series once again. And even the graphics have aged over the years (it's been 16 years since the release of the first part), the gameplay is still topnotch! But thanks to the creative community at Descent2.de, you can play this revolutionary classic in HD graphics with all those next-gen, laser-blazer, supa-dupa-fly effects. Interested? Read on the writeup about the D2X-XL project made by one of its creators.
Just gave D2X-XL a shot on my laptop. With all graphics / render settings on minimum, and resolution at 640x480 I get the awesome framerate of ... 2.

Mmmyeah, I think I'll be sticking with Rebirth.
karx11erx: No offence intended. I don't personally have any interest in which source port (if any) people use. I was merely trying to improve the information for any people reading who are entirely new to the world of Descent source ports.

Definitely not all settings. I'm running it on Intel GMA 950 and 1.6 GHz Atom. Runs at normal speed.

I remember trying to play Descent 3 when it was first released. Oh, it looked pretty spiffy! But man, I can still remember the cold swet, the dizziness and the nautiousness....even days later if I thought about it I would feel "sea sick" It did a number on me....more than any other game I can think of.
I tried to get this to work a couple of months ago under linux. There is a linux version but it was going to be a way lot of trouble. Instead I ran the windows version of the Rebirth project using wine( couldn't get the linux port of that to run either). It doesn't look a nice but its way better than running in under dosBox. Music doesn't work though.
A bonus for this is that it makes Descent 1 & 2 fully cross-platform. I run it on my Mac and once I found some key settings, the performance was great and it looked spectacular.
@kalirion:

Usually that hints to driver problems.

@gooberking:

There is a detailled and well structured Linux installation guide available. If reading and following that is too much trouble, the problem may actually not be the D2X-XL installation.

What am I missing then?

Up to date drivers? (I wrote that already)

If, or once, they are up to date and you still have a low frame rate, try to add "-use_shaders 0" to d2x.ini (found in the config subfolder).

Nope, neither worked. I made the changes in d2x-default.ini because there was no d2x.ini in the subfolder.
Well, the only thing I can recommend then is to register in the D2X-XL forum, post your hardware specs and ask for help there.
This sounds really awesome. I'd install it now, but my laptop is aging, slowing down, and all that garbage. It's a shame what four years does to a laptop...
I'm tempted to reinstall Descent and apply the mod just to experience that amazing automap upgrade.

The automap is truly amazing!

cute. I've read it.

Installing things from source is a barbaric adventure that I've never returned from victoriously in a solid 10 years of linux using(unless you count my own software.) Seeing as how people often comment their software installation instructions with things like "now type make and pray...." I don't feel like its just me. There were repositories for the install but the required lines actually were crashing the package manager. Seeing as how I can play the game just fine, I really don't feel like its worth the trouble.
