They're better at swaying neutral planets, have better starfighters and of course a hidden movable HQ :p

There is something to be said for the Empire's might though, especially if you conquer some Rebel planets early...
The empire has the death star, star destroyers and TIE Defenders, the rebels can't compete with the destructive power or with the cool

Blowing up planets with the DS tends to cause the galaxy to revolt against you :p

Sure if you use them like a blunt instrument, they're best used as mobile fighter bases (24 squadrons split between bombers & fighters can take down most anything) and to suppress systems if they get too rebellious

Escort carriers bring TIEs along much more cheaply, and you could save the troop garrison for planets rather than the obvious target that a Death Star is.
This is true but escort carriers lack the superlaser one shot kill against enemy cruisers either to weaken their strongest forces or kill their interdictor so you can retreat. Using a death star as a mobile base gives you a highly concentrated and flexible fighting force capable of taking down most any target, whether in space combat, planetary invasion or planetary bombardment (with the option of blowing the planet if you really want).

Its a vulnerable target to enemy fighters but thats why you carry a minimum of 12 squadrons of starfighters and possibly escort with lancer frigates, establish space superiority and trench runs are not a very likely threat

I'm also really tempted to see how rebellion will run on my netbook now...
Heh, all this talk made me thrash through my storage room and find the disk. Installed it last night on my laptop... shouldn't of done that, ended up playing WAY to long! I am a mess today....

I forgot about the HORRENDOUS voice-acting to the Emperor and Vader...dear god! I burst out laughing every time Vader goes "I have arrived!".....oh man!

I also forgot about that annoying unskipabul briefing in the beginning.

I remember clearly that we were able to skip it, by simply clicking anywhere on the star map.

Filthgrinder: Star War Rebellion is a very rare game to get a hold of. Sadly it was not a success, but steadily grew more and more in popularity as years went by.

It is now considered a "classic" and a "collectible".

I own the game, but can only play it in Win XP mode on Win 7, and it turn into a small square. I can adjust my screen resolution, but it will still look bad.

I would LOVE to see this GREAT game available via in gog fixed and compatible for Win 7.... And I think it is the only chance it has for seeing the light of day once again.

What is this game?

It's pretty much a 4x game. You colonize, expand your power, hunt down the Rebels or Empire. It offers a lot of strategy, and HOURS of game play, and re-playability since it fully randomizes your start. Not to mention you have 3 different galaxy sizes to play.

I was going to do a "Lets Play" on YouTube, but some guy beat my to it.

Here, have a look : http://www.youtube.com/user/jnwestray78#p/u/2/5jdb4PBRm7Q

I am not one to beg and grovel, but PLEASE get it gog!
I only know of its greatness because I had a friend back in the nineties who owned and played the crap out of it.

Back then I was young and broke so couldn't afford to buy a copy outright.

Much later I went looking for it to find that it is abandoned ware that no abandon ware site will carry and that it got really bad reviews.

If GoG could sign on Lucas Arts and get a copy of this, i would be one of the first in the gate to purchase.

Right now though, if you liked that, I should direct your attention to Star Wars Empire at War which can currently still be found on Steam.
I am aware of Star Wars Empire at War. But it was too much of a RTS for me. I prefer the auto battle result, and just having the overview of the planets etc like Rebellion has.

Yeah, I remember the same thing. Found out how just a few minutes ago. If you go to compatibly mode set to Win 95, then you can skip it with just a click. You can't under any other mode. Strange, but hey, it works.

I prefer Galactic Battlegrounds to Rebellion. It is even better than the Empire at War for me.

That is a good point, I forgot we were talking about the second iteration :p I still think the resources and shipyards are better used building packs of ISDs\a few SSDs for the firepower. Two SSD classes carry the same number of troops and fighters. Plus a fleet with a Death Star is very slow, especially if you ever need to retreat.

As I understand it, as soon as the Rebels outnumber the Imperial fighters in the battle, they can spare squadrons to go into the trench.

Occasionally crashes after a battle in Win XP even with compatibility mode on (something to do with the Z-buffer and how newer graphics cards handle it).
Bump, I really want this game on GoG too, I used to play it a little bit and got pretty far on one playthrough but then my best friend that owned it eventually moved away, and when I finally got a copy of my own I found out it wouldn't work on my windows 7 computer.

I want to begin chargin mah lazer!
It is a brilliant game indeed.
