Here is a deal:

I don't know whether I should buy Alpha Centauri or not. I do like Civilization series but I also think that Civ2 is a bit outdated after playing Civ3. So the question is whether Alpha Centauri is more similar to Civ2 or Civ3? Furthermore I don't really like futuristic strategy games, at least most of them so I'm a bit confused... please help me with that. Will I enjoy the game?

Somebody who will post the most convincing/funny/incredible/etc. argument will get any game from the current promo. Please note that you CAN convince me not to buy the game and get your reward nonetheless. Actually I think it would be easier to convince me not to buy it... but the choice is yours.

Deadline: the very moment I'm convinced
Alpha Centauri is sometimes referred to as an extension of Civilization II, basically telling the rest of the story if the player had won by building the spaceship. Gameplay is very similar to Civ II. Basically, if you like futuristic sci-fi and like the playstyle of Civ II, then you'll probably enjoy Alpha Centauri.
If you don't buy it, I will lick a game.
It's 2.99$ anyway so if you buy it and don't like it (which I doubt) you won't regret it very much.

If you're a true Civ fan, then you have to buy Alpha Centauri, if nothing else, because it has Sid Meier's name on it.It's 3 bucks, for God's sake . And it really is a good game, btw.

In Lost in Space, the Smith Family were heading to Alpha Centauri, if that doesnt make you want to go there, you are a luddite and should stick to earth based games :)
Heres the thing it's not Civ2 nor is it civ3 AC is what they designed while they couldn't get their hands on the civ IP. As such it has something inbetween civ2&3... think of it as an evolutionary step between the two, now thats not to say there's nothing unique about it, the various sides and their abilities, the terain and it's effect on the ecology of the planet (wind goes east to west so creating a wall that stops rainfall and causes starvation is a valid strategy here) are different to what you experiece, while theres no religion you do get social settings that can wildly change your playstyle.
All in all it is a great game, the tech doesn't take away from the game in any way, shape or form the actions of the other leaders and their tactics, the different play styles each require to work at their best are all very unique. I would say yes get it just to experience what is still regarded as one of the greatest TBS's ever made but don't expect civ in space.
As posted in the promo thread:

The "futuristic strategy game" part you mention only has a little bearing on the game as a whole though. Think of it more like Civ on an alien planet. Though I do like that it's unlike the Civ games in several aspects. Significantly more hostile environments, slightly less direct tech tree, customizable units (never to be seen again in one of Sid's/Firaxis's games)... I also always appreciated that instead of actual races/nationalities each faction is based on a certain ideology.

In many if not all aspects I still think Alpha Cenaturi is the pinnacle of the Civ(-like) games. Seeing how its creator, Bryan Reynolds, embraced the idiotic world of Zynga crap as of late I highly doubt we'll see it bested anytime soon.

Edit: I totally forgot to mention the whole 3D aspect of the landscape (also unique to AC). Terraforming is a big part of the game environment (makine a tile more hospitable, lower or raise terrain, etc.). An actual mountain rise will affect nearby tiles (think rainfall and such).

Is that a threat? ;) The funny thing is that I'm not quite sure whether you are trying to convince me to buy the game or the opposite... both theories sound equally probable

PLEASE don't say anything about money, ok? I'm confused and tired not a simpleton. I perfectly know that I can afford it and I won't regret spending just three dollars. It's not the point!

Video or it didn't happen!
For $3 you can buy a game that lets you use planet buster weapons that can cause global warming and make everyone hate you including the native lifeforms. For $3 you can buy a game that lets you conduct genetic warfare. For $3 you can buy a game that lets you play as futuristic Spartans. This list can go on and on. Basically you can be as evil as you want, good as you want or in between. You have a lot of very very different interesting factions to choose from too. There is a lot of freedom in this good very original game.

I think you shouldn't buy it. It's sci-fi strategy game First impression is important. If you're already on the fence, you'll probably not like it. I don't know much about the game, i'm just speak from my experience. There are lots of game that i bought, but never finish it (or just play for couple of minutes / hours) because i'm not really interested on the games from the get go.
